Build Log
I.A.R. 81C Romanian fighter

Call me crazy but... A new book was just published on this rarely modeled fighter plane that brought down close to a dozen P 38 fighters over Ploesti while escorting B24 bombers. I have the good luck to obtain the help of Radu Brinzan the author of the newly released book titled. Vānator - Romanian" Hunter: The I.A.R.80 and 81 in ultimate detail". Having all this great documentation at hand I started another project. The design of a 1/5 scale rc version. It will be a slow build since I am still working on the Savoia S51 Schneider racer. I started with the cowl plug and have drawings printed out ready to be glued to plywood and cut on a band saw..

Looking forward to this.

I've been working in Romania on and off over the past 10 years and have a RO Mig 21 on my to do list. Pre-war, Romania made a significant contribution to aeronautical engineering (and to arts and science more generally) that is not widely known.

Ploesti (pronounced Plo-esht) is still a big centre for the oil industry and the emissions are still fierce.

This is an airplane I've wanted to build for a l-o-n-g time but had difficulty finding three views and sections. Jerry Bates Plans had a little survey on RCScalebuilder on which airplane plans should be made available next a few years ago. This was my choice!

I just took a look at the top view - it's like a pattern plane, albeit with a slightly shorter nose. Should be a good flier.
(Great reference book, too)

Awesome! I'm a big fan of this one as well. I got the shape modeled for one awhile back, but that's as far as I got.

Thanks for the link to book--what a great resource. The Clavework plates are sweet, too.

Subscribed,

Paul

fuse and tail group

Now that the cowl formers are done I moved to the other end of the plane. The rudder is next then the fuse formers.
