It would be nice to see a more modern carrier as a museum, yes we have the USS Midway. A larger and more modern carrier would be great sitting for all to see. I know that the cost to maintain and a location to get it set up cost a lot as well. After all if they can sell it for scrap for a small price why can't it be sold to a group to make it a museum. We all know that the chances of a CVN ever becoming a museum are little to no way.

It is not the cost of the ship that inhibits the museum status.
It is the the restrictions of local cities, and ports ability to provide a berth.
It is also the requirement of the Navy that the ship be maintained in a state of readiness.
The cost of meeting just these two requirments runs in the millions.
I seem to recall that the Ranger Museum project needed 8 million to proceed.
Their first proposal to bring it to Portland, Oregon involved Terminal 1, and
the Port of Portland wanted no part of that. This also involved creating a new
concrete pier on the Willamette. This pier was part of the base requirement.
The Proposal for Troutdale, Fairview, required the ship to be moved past the
railroad bridge crossing the Columbia river between Vancover and Portland.
The proposal asked that the swing span, or one of the fixed span be temporarily
removed, placed on barges, and floated away to pass the carrier, then reassembled.
The railroad had a hard time imagining that. Also there was a need for dredging the that
Army Corps of Engineers would have to perform in order for the carrier to make it to the site.
It was an uphill battle, and there were just too few financier able to see the potential of a "museum ship".
