Breaking XC record.
Breaking XC record.
I have a idea to break the XC record here in Aus.
In the southern part of Aus we have the great Australian bight which has a coast line that is one continuous cliff that runs for hundreds of klms and is backed but nothing but desert and from what I can see on google earth there is a dirt road that runs along the top of the cliff I am not sure how long this road runs for but not having been there I think the road can go for many klm's
If wind is blowing in the right direction which would probably mean from the south you would have best of both worlds as you could slope soar along the cliffs and thermal further back inland in the desert air and there woud'nt be many obstacles in you way.
A hang glider pilot broke 2 world records there not long ago.
Just a idea.

That sounds like a great place to break some distance records, either distance to a goal, or distance to a goal and return. If the site is as you describe you should give it a go! Slope soaring is just as valid as thermal soaring for records.

It would be much less painful to jump off the cliff than to drive along that track looking left for 8 hours.
But, get a fast glider and fly it from the passenger seat of a Cessna and you'd have the record in a few hours.

OK, 140.67 miles.
Is that coastline more than 141 miles long?
If you can average 30 mph you can beat it in 5 hours of flight and I would imagine an open coastline would afford you the opportunity to go faster than that.
What is the speed limit on the road?
Any blind spots where you would not be able to see the glider?
