Weight of G10 in comparison to the weight of Carbon fiber.

For example:

if they were both 100mm x 100mm square plates (1.0mm thick)

Carbon fiber would weigh - 20 grams and g10 would weigh? (how much)

Back of a smoke packet math: Density of glass (only the fibres) is around 2.6gcm^-3, carbon is ~1.9. Resin uptake is similar, so I'll assume a Vf of 50%. Difference in density for the laminate is therefore 0.35gcm^-3, so a 10cm3 plate would have a 3.5g difference. Strength/stiffness though would be very different.

OK thank you.

What thickness would you advise? I used 1.0mm carbon for my previous quad...I want a similar strength. I read somewhere doubling the size of the thickness of g10 is equivalent to CF strength wise.

 Feb 22, 2013, 08:19 AM I am actually really slow Brisbane Joined Jun 2008 907 Posts G10 is heavier then Carbon of the same thickness G10 Isnt as stiff as Carbon of the same thickness G10 Is Cheaper G10 will flex more before it breaks G10 doesnt conduct electricty (something to consider also) The usual thing though, atleast for helicopters, is that carbon is superior to G10 for frames. I wouldnt go back to G10 frames in a million years. If you crash your quad, both are going to break anyhow. Latest blog entry: Carbon Fiber up close
