Lazy Cub Build Guide with Plans and Video

Recently I was approached to kit my Blazy Bee design, knowing that this was a foamie version of the Clancy Aviation Lazy Bee, I want it to be just a bit different so as to not step on any toes. Then the idea came to give a theme to this classic design making it all the more mine.

First the paint job. That would be easy, a simple Cub yellow paint job with the black lightening bolt and trade the polyhedral wing for a straight dihedral one. That looks pretty cool and very Cub-ish! Still it looked like a Blazy Bee with a Cub paint job.

Next I looked to the tail feathers. The horizontal stab and elevator were relatively easy. Just fit it into the same span as the BB and scale it fore and aft to closely duplicate the area of both surfaces. The rudder was another matter. The BB has an all flying rudder and the Cub does not. However this was a feature of the BB that I was not willing to compromise. I eventually ended up with a pleasant Cub-esque shape with an all flying rudder.

One more area that would be nice to change was the windscreen. The BB has a faceted one and I just did not think this would do for the Lazy Cub. So with some experimentation and trial I got a nice smoothly radiused one in its place that was easy to construct.

Some other details that would be nice to do are some engine cylinder heads and maybe wing struts. The motor details would dress up the nose nicely, and the struts would just give it more character, though they are not needed.

Another design goal was to make this kit package friendly as I want to offer kits to those who would like one. Often this is an after thought since the goal is to get to a model design that functions well, usually irrespective of shipping and material optimization. I am thankful this was achieved right from the start.

Got to fly it indoors today and it did not take long before it was sold. This plane just putters around at less than half throttle and was flying itself for nearly ten minutes hands off. I will get some video of that for you.

Plans and a build guide are forthcoming shortly. Until them, enjoy the short outdoor video and pictures.

Best wishes,
Ken

Oh dear

I haven't even finished building all the kits I ordered not too long ago and now you do this :-)

The better question is WHY am I here looking for more planes.

Maybe I can talk the XYL into getting me one for Christmas!

Great stuff Ken, you have spoiled me with the kits.
