Build Log
24" FF->RC Jug

Every once in a while, I'll build a Peanut or Walnut rubber power kit to remind me to build light.
2 years ago I converted a MicroX Stinson 125 to RC using the guts from the UMX GeeBee. It flies beautifully.
So I picked up a Golden Age Reproduction FF rubber Thunderbolt kit at Toledo swap shop for $20.00.
I'm using the guts from the UMX Pitts. Flew that twice and removed the radio/ power.
Hope to come in under 2.6 ounces rtf.
Mark

Cool! 2oz sounds like a reasonable goal. Without landing gear like you prefer.
I'm planning on building a series of models in this size using the same equipment.
Even had a wild idea of using GWS micro retracts driven by a linear servo. That is if the servo has enough 'grunt' to do the job.

I think if the flying beer cooler weighs 2.6, I can
Its a very light build too. Lots of wing area...
20-21" would be better, but the price was right

Indeed. Thankfully, this kit has very light wood. I looked them up and they're still around. Some neat rubber kits like very nice P39.

Cool! I have been drooling over some plans for a FF P47 about this size for a while, trying to figure out a way to get a cool scale 4 blade prop and a nice lightweight motor to turn it!

Looking forward to seeing this one completed.

it's looking good already. I've built a few with that power, but am starting to have problems seeing them so am adding a few inches to the span and going a bit larger with the motor.

Im not using scale prop, I'm using the 5" x 2.75" that came on the Pitts, but it works well on the Stinson I built, so .....

To turn a 8" 4 blader would require a lot more motor, and I'm trying to stay very light.

If I recall correctly, that kit gives you the option to build a "Razorback" or a P-47D Bubbletop, and canopies for both versions. if one chooses the Razorback, the Bubble canopy fits the Comet P-47D, which needs a decent canopy. Looking forward to watching this build.

Indeed, it give you both canopies. I am going Razorback, it has more character and I like O.D.

I have to agree -- I have a book stashed away somewhere on the Checkertail Squadron that I bought just for that kit.

REALLY looking forward to it now!

I built the Comet years ago and had it hanging in my room. I painted it silver, but the weight really killed any flight performance other than an extended "power-glide." That is one of the many kits for which I would like a "do-over."

LOL. Yea, me too!

I was considering building a Jug about this size and did some motor experiments.
Found the 10 gram 1811 2000kv motor is not capable of spinning a 6" four blade prop on 2 cells. Would need a motor in the 1200-1500kv range and didn't have one to test.

Sure, I'm just not concerned w scale size prop. The 3000 kV 2 cell pulls the Stinson fine, I'm sure it'll be fine.
You could always go gearbox.
Got one wing panel partially framed last night, looks like it'll fit well.
