Tribute to Volmer Jensen - VJ-24w project

Years ago when I was a poor student in college I came across Volmer Jensen designs in an ultralight book. Although his best known design was probably the amphibian VJ-22 Sportsman, I was really fascinated by his ultralight designs that he pioneered in the 60's. His VJ-23e was flown across the English Channel on 10 horse power by David Cook. I bought a set of his VJ-24w plans back in the 90's and built the airframe, but never had the money to put an engine on it.

Anyway, after all these years I decided to finally get one flying so I built a model of one. I used Depron for the wings and empenage, a Estees model rocket tube for the fuselage, wooden dowels for the undercarriage, and graphite rods for the struts.

Brushless C10 motor
Wingspan 44" (about 1/10 scale)
RTF weight about 5 oz

Ready for a test flight.. just waiting on the weather. It should be a real slow flyer.

Here's some pictures, and a link of David cook flying a real one.

That is excellent!
It does need a scale David Cooke however. You can carve a foam figure while you wait for good weather :-)

Do you still have the full size plans? They are not being sold right now, the copyright is in transition to a new owner.

I was hanging around the Seaplane Base at the annual Oshkosh event when commentary
turned towards Volmer Jensens' Seaplane.

It was recounted that the take off speed was 85 mph but also that the Vne was also 85 mph
and the Stall speed was 85 mph so in order to fly the thing
you really had to pay attention to the speed.
