As I understand it, the ammonia affects the lignin, temporarily softening it, allowing the wood to become more flexible, in effect.

Once dry, all is well again.

Or at least that's close to what I recall reading about it...

Why the splice plates? Seems unnecessary with a good glue joint.

Interesting question Mike... Probably not vital when joining sheet before fitting onto the model - though I'm not sure I would trust a whippy thing two sheets long not to get away from me and break apart at the joint.
I use them because my choice is to fit one sheet at a time so as lengths don't get too unmanageable. I then add the splice plates to assist in getting the (by then curved) sheet ends in line.
The question did not therefore occur to me - maybe Jay has a different take on it...

Ok gang since I had a LOT of spare time at my latest chemo treatment I had time to ponder how to put the skin on.. Seeing as there is that nice box frame on the inside that would make a dandy cut ref.. The sides will follow the line on the inside of the frames.. which allows the top and bottom to join at a flat spot instead of on the curve. Now since this baby is a tad wide in the beam, it behoved me to see just how fat she is... did I just say that?? so on with the paper to see how much to add to the bottom sheet..

Yup worked great John. It is a tad over 10.5" at the widest point.. Ok so how much do I need to fill the gap and where will it be? Easy to find out.. Main sheet is 6" so 3" from center is marked and what is left is the dimension.. Out near the end the bottom sheet will get trimmed to keep things straight. The side sheets get their bottom cuts straight from the plans
