C-5 Galaxy Build

What's BIG, Blue, has four fans a'screeching and 28 wheels a'turnin?

My first scratch build for 2015 - a F.R.E.D!
(actually started a week ago)

Tentative specs are:
Scale: Approx 1/33
Wingpan: 84"
Length: 89"
Power: Four 65mm, six blade fans, 4cell Lipo(s) - Depending on final weight and further testing
Fiberglass over blue foam construction with a few balsa and plywood bits

I'm going to attempt to keep it very light, shooting for the "floaty" look as per the full size. Target weight is 8 lbs, but 10 lbs will be acceptable I think.

Nice!. C5 Galaxies were the first heavy transporters that I fall in love with back in early 80s!

Thanks Sam, I'll try to do it justice.

I've ridden in them a few times. Usually to places I didn't really want to go.

That was part of my decision to do this one. Other than a lack of decent diagrams, I don't see why it's not modeled more often. It has nice curves and a real presense in the air IMO.

Maybe all the wheels (28!) scare everybody away LOL!

Happy new year everybody!

I only got to ride one once. After loading up the trucks for REFORGER (late 80s I think) I was surprised to find it had a second level with airline seats.

Yup, it's a bit of a climb to get up there too. The front is a better ride, with the added bonus that you can visit with the flight crew and see what's actually going on. (usually not much)

Got the power system and fan mounts all done, except the pylons. Ready for a test run on fans in the morning. I'll post up pictures tomorrow.

I figure at max, with fresh batteries, I should be getting approx 40A per fan at 14.4v, so total input watts in theory is 2304W. (If I did my math right - 4x40x14.4)

Should be plenty of "go" to haul this thing I think. I'll run everything up with a wattmeter to get real numbers,. Thinking through a couple of ideas to achieve the trademark C-5 whine/whistle sound. If you've never heard it, it's a very distinctive noise.

Ran the complete power system up, and it sounds like a C-5! (and it's really loud)

I goofed on the numbers though, at full blast, one pair of fans is pulling about 15A, 215-220 watts. Total of 440W doesn't really make sense to me, seems like it would be more on this setup. They sure were pushing a LOT of air, and pulled the entire test rig forward a bit (with everything on it - about 25#)

I think I can live with long takeoff runs, as long as it eventually gets in the air. The full size doesn't exactly leap into the air either.

What does one fan draw in power?
If that is 4s the volts are quite low so the pack can't hold up under the load.
