70" + hotliner suggestions

My favorite model of 2015 was my Gerasis Smart. I had it in the box for well over 15 years and decided to finally get it in the air (after a large break from RC). What a wonderful machine. I fly mine on a MVVS 4.6/840 and 14x8 on 3S.

I love it. But I want something bigger!! Any suggestions for a hotliner with a two-piece wing over approximately 70"? I don't compete. I just want something to tear up the sky.

I currently have a MVVS redliner sitting on the bench. It's married to a 75A Castle Phoenix Lite. I also have some HS-82 and HS-65's available.

Right now I'm looking at the following.
  • Sprinter Evo
  • TopModel Nike 2
  • TopModel Acro Twister
  • Ion w/ flaps

Any comments on the above or other good suggestions? Thanks for your advice!!

I had the Reichard Sprinted Evo with exactly the same "Redline" motor. Probably the best of all the frame you've listed. I have also owned the Nike 2, and didn't like it at all. My friend had the Ion yrs ago, and after seeing it fly, it was what got me into hotliner type airframes. I have never personally seen the Topmodel Twister, but I am sure it follow's closely with the other Topmodel names.
Reichard (IMHO) has some of the best entry level hotliners in this price range. Their craftsmanship, especially of their wings is something that has to be seen, and handled to be appreciated. Yes they are foam core, fiberglass reinforced, and balsa sheeted. But, they are significantly strong, and will easily handle the 1k watts of the Redline motor.
If you could put off purchasing until you saved a few more pennies, I would also recommend the Kamelot. You may want to consider ditching the Redline motor for something more capable if you went the Kamelot route

Thanks! I ended up ordering the Sprinter Evo! Should be a good match for what I desire. I will definitely get one of the fvk models such as the Kamelot but I wanted something to arrive quickly and Florida is only one state away from me. I was considering the Siren all along but I knew I wasn't going to be impressed with it (quality, speed) so I think the Sprinter Evo will fit the bill. Should be here tomorrow.

I will keep saving for a nice F5B model this summer!

How long does it take for a model from FVK to make it to the states?

Hello, just wondering if you are planning to use the MVVS redliner for this model.
If yes, it would not be considered a hotliner by today's standards. Just so people know what you are looking for in this model.

There are many setups for F5B described in this forum that are powerful and quite durable when used correctly. You said "hotliner" and "tear up the sky", so that's what would be recommended. Flying around with 1kW may be fun, too but when you've seen the acceleration of a 6kW drive it will suddenly feel rather inadequate.
I started to fly RC at a field where there was one guy who flew a Kamelot with maybe 800W. Initially I thought that was insane but through a case of one-upmanship we quickly bought our way to up F5B power levels and unfortunately you just get used to it and can't possibly go back to less.

I wouldn't think about any NEU 15 series, or the Jeti motors for the Reichard Sprinter. The airframe would likely not hold up for the first full throttle launch. In addition, they are far to heavy. Your Redliner (although still heavy) will do fine. 1000 watts is even more than the manufacture designed this airframe for, however, I know (from experience) the airframe can handle that. The Reichard models are beautifully built "light-weight" sailplanes. The Sprinter is a great model, but it is not an F5B model. I would rather see something along the lines of an "11" series motor, or a B40 for hotliner-ish performance. It will most likely out-perform just about anything else at your field, except the F5B/D/pylon planes.

Yeah, agreed. A 1512 would rip the wings off that plane.

I have a reichard mefisto with about 1.6kw, and that's about all she can take. At about 120mph the ailerons get mushy. Really fun plane though. Just can't dive at full throttle. I originally thought my servos weren't strong enough and replaced them with hitec 82s. Wasn't the servos. Found out the wing was deforming under load causing lockout.

I put one of these Hyperions in it with a 13x11 and run it on 4s. Fantastic warmliner.

$100, can't beat the price. I beat the snot outta mine. Run 110 amps through it all day. Hits 160 degrees. Doesn't care. I paired it with a $60 yep 150 from hobbyding. A lot a bang for very little buck.

If you really want an "out runner in a can" hobbyding has them too. I ran about 1kw through this one and it held up just fine. Looks like they're on back order. For $35 I'm not surprised.

It really depends what you wanna do with it. You could put 300 watts in that plane and climb and dive and still have a blast. If you want unlimited vertical and want to push it, shoot for at least 1kw. Max would be about 1.5kw.

Hey Seng, how come you have the rod of asclepius as your avatar?

I've been thinking of getting it tattooed on my forearm. I'm a type 1 diabetic.
