need some help figuring out a few things

i've got an old mono 1 hull (twin step fast electric hull) that i'm turning into a narrow hull sail/racing boat, the hulls about 28" long with a beam of about 8", the mast will be 3 feet long

so my question is this :-

1 - keel length ( i was thinking 12" - 14") or any other idea's ??
2 - keel weight, what should this be (4lb or something)

thanks guys, nick

a few photo's

photo 1= side view of over all length

photo 2= front view to show the beam

photo 3= view to show servo's placement, front servo will be a 1 turn sail winch and running line (old servo case and output gear used for mock up's) and rear servo is for the rudder

the rx and battery will be placed either side of the keel box, the hole at the front is for pulley access and will be covered over when painting is to be done, no super structure will be made just a sliding hatch for access

Nick...

Certainly a random idea. Good luck with it, you may find you have a few luffing up/bearing away problems.
Keel depth, the deeper the better! try 12-24 inches, and see how you go. A deeper keel means more power(sail) carrying ability.
Weight wise. I would try to get it to sit on an even keel nose up slightly, with the chines (assuming it has small vertical sides to the hull) on the WL, go with weight to suit that.

Else, bring it along to the next meeting, and i can have a look

thanks scott

underneath it has 2 steps at the rear and 3 strakes (both sides) running 3/4 of the hull length (from bow to first step)

will bring it to the next meeting just to show everyone else, i'm waiting on sail winch some ally tube for the jib boom

A fairly standard high performance FE hull then.

I look forward to seeing it.
I will be bringing along my LB, as i think i'll offer it within the club (i don't really feel the urge to build it any more)
ANd have given myself a challenge (1/400th scale plastic Aircraft carrier to rc conversion, for the fun of it

Wonder if it could carry enough sail as a trimaran to plane?

once the sail winch gets here and installed, its a case of finding out how much keel weight i need then, i have sail rig (its the big rig with a 3 foot mast) already setup that i use on my star baby cabin cruiser to sort the boom and jib setup and then see how she sails
