F-16XL EDF jet

Hi guys.

I recently started on my F-16XL edf. The size of the plane is 195cm long and a wing span of 120cm. It will be built mainly of foam and some carbon rod for strenght, before glassing the whole plane for a nice finish.

The paint scheme I am going for is nasa`s test plane as in the picture.

Propulsion will be a 12 bladed 90mm fan. Will of course be very happy with any advice around my project from experienced builders in this forum.

I hope it will have low wing load, but not to slow in the air. Next step now is to form the nose section and cover rest of the fuselage. My aim is to make look like real thing when it comes to the shape.

Need to work out a descent power setup too.

Sounds like your looking at the CS 90, 12blade--if so, you best read this :

Change Sun 12 blade 90mm

Lots of fiddling around to get it right.

And before you cover rest of the fuselage, you better figure out where and how your going to mount the fan, battey placement, and where the ESC needs to be. You will have to do something with all those buklkheads , to make any fan fit.

Also the intake ducting--- you have lots of things that need to be done, well before you do any more sheeting. And don't for get to figure out the CG.

I would think it would be pretty hard to go any further, untill you have the fan, ESC and batteries ( in hand ) so you know the weights and dimentioins of all the components.

Yeah i know Cooler, Some of the bulkheads will be changed to wooden ones, and i even has to make some kind bridge construction to support the wing spar and the under carriage. This Change sun 90mm you mentioned, is it total crap or could it work at all?

What I will do first is still the cockpit section, as i think it needs to have the right shape,

Then I will install the bulkheads and cut open the middle to fit the rear pipe.

The innlet duct will have to bended, going from the mid section in the fuselage down under the nose section.

Have to figure out wether I need to make a hatch behind the canopy or just go for a detachable canopy and place batteries there.

I will concentrate my effort on the top side before I start making the bottom side of the plane

My opinion, - Plenty of other 90mm fans out there to pick from. All depends on your pocket book, and how good of quality one you want!!
My preference is the JetFan 90/with a Het motor..

I did look over the pics in the first post a little closer, here I thought they were already glued in, My mistake. It would'nt hurt to have the fan for setting up the bulkheads correctly. Also , watch how you set the thrust line. Read this thread:
AoA and thrust line?
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1730968
good info on 2nd page about it.

And, Glad you got the build thread going. I was wondering when you were going to show up?...

Mine will have a mid mounted fan unit. I gues that means a zero degree thrustline.

What I really like is that I dont have to worry about the stab incidence.

Thanks Cooler.. BTW. i`ll follow your advice and get a fan unit, so i can carry on with the plane.

Everytime I see someone do the XL version, I remember I have an old Kyosho F-16 fuselage, that I have planned on doing the XL version for 10 yrs. When I have the time, it's never on my mind...

Good luck with yours. Being a delta, it usually takes more power to get on step.

Its nice plane the XL. Remember to stretch the fuse when you decide to build it.

Mine won`t be finished for quite a while, but i`m doing some slow progress with it though.

I`m finally back. Havent done to much progress with the XL, but I have managed to get some 3mm foam sheets to skin the fuse now. the shape of the nose section with the hump behind the canopy had to be redone 4 times before I was happy. I will stick to my plan and finish the top first, before I start making formers for the belly and the intake.
