Digital Skins are AWESOME!

finally got my new dub covered with some 10 mil book covering and ready for the digital skins.
i've done a bunch of jws with ultracote. the last few with ns over the ultracote which works really nice. i always kinda dread the covering part of the build though, so when aaron came out with these digital skins i was very interested...

i followed aaron's instructions pretty close. creasing the LE and cutting the backing off at the crease and reapplying the backing was the real trick. i would have never come up with that on my own!
i did the first half without a glove and it was ok. the second half i put on a glove and it went about twice as fast. amazing how strong the adhesive is, but still easy to rub out any creases or bubbles. you can even peel it back if you need to remove any mistakes. very forgiving even for someone as impatient as me!

i really took my time putting these skins on and still only took about an hour. that is about a tenth of the time of covering and cutting trim and all the mess. very quick very neat and clean! also another plus, there is no LE seam !
the only difficulty is around the tips. just a little heat really makes these pliable, but i still think i'll wrap some hockey tape around the tips so the seam doesn't open up.

Marty,
I am working on solutions to the wing tip seam area. One idea is to use scrap material 1/2 wide to cover the tip, but it would need to match the color scheme. What I have been doing for now is using clear tape (like the 3m clear patch and repair stuff) as insurance.

On my UL that I have been using extensively, I simply had about 3/16" overlap at the tip and it has held perfectly with no reinforcement through major abuse testing.

i did a good overlap on the tips and they look ok. heck ns and ultracote both have issues on tips. i just want some tape over the tip so it doesn't open up on the inevitable tip strikes to come!
no complaints here on the skins at all! great idea you had and aaron and fantastic job getting them to the market!

It would be good to see you some time, Marty. I need to get out and fly a little more anyway.

Digital skins ARE awesome! Just applied mine today. They are an essential addition to any jw build.

Using a hair dryer to apply a small amount of heat made curves really easy and helped tack down the edges. Aarons guide is fantastic. Very easy to apply when you follow the guide. Test flight soon hopefully

Just a note, this JW wasn't filled and sanded prior to Lam Film and you can sure see the difference!
