Gens Ace 850 3s Failures

I have four 3s 850 packs less than year old. Flown maybe 15 times for five minutes at no more than 6 amps in a trex 250. Charged average was around 400-500 mah input no more. After a four month lay off all four packs fully charged will only last 30 seconds before the trex 250 looses power and lands. recharging indicates only about 30 mah used. In comparison on the dame flying session of same trex 250' two old thundpower 750 3s packs provide full power for flight of five minutes with 400 mah used.
i.e. four similar branded packs lost their punch within same period sitting on bench at full charge.

I have close to 30 GensAce batteries that that I bought in 2010 and 2011. They range from 2s1000 to 6s4000. Many have over 100 cycles. They have been used in Planes, cars, trucks and FE boats. The only one that is starting to have balancing problems is a 6s4000 that was in one of the boats when the Castle Hydra 120 ESC decided to go up in smoke and caused a dead short that unsodered the 5.5mm bullet connectors I was using on the battery. I thought it would be toast then but still balanced well and showed no signs of puffing or capacity loss. That was 2 years ago and it is just starting to have a lazy cell. The rest are still performing great. Very pleased with my experience with them. I have Hyperions also.

TURNIGY NANO-TECH 45-90C 3300 6S
Over 250 HARD 3D flights on Torque 4215-500 with 15x7 Xoar
Just now starting to balance off just a tad. But still plenty of power.
"Don't always blame the battery." Use one with plenty of current capacity and don't fly them down past 3/4 capacity or charge while still warm. That's all of MHO. Ordering some new A-SPEC series from HK soon.

How bad are capacity ratings exaggerated?

Does anybody have any experience with "Mystery" lipo packs?

I just got back into RC, and have always built my own packs, (Ni-cads in the past if you want me to date myself).

I've been doing the same with the lipos, using Panasonic hybrids, with good results, and very low weight. They don't have the super high 25 or 35c, but I don't have the need.
I've recently built a couple foamie park flyers, so decided to try the newfangled envelope packs. I've been making 2s and 3s packs so I ordered a 1500mah 2S Mystery for about 10 bucks to give a try.

It is dismal! I'm getting about 450mah after balance charging and discharging to 3.0/cell with a Thunder AC680 charger. Thats 30% advertised capacity!!!

My Panasonic hybrids are giving me 2350 ish from a 2900mah nameplate cell. I'm only discharging to 3.00v instead of the nameplate 2.50v, so that's expected. That's 80% which I can live with.

Is there something wrong with this battery, or is this typical of the cheap chinese fare? I don't yet have a "feel" for how lipos run, but I've heard people here mention exaggerated claims on capacity. I never dreamed it was this bad!

If so, it's a bad deal all the way around, because to get the same capacity, my weight goes from about 100g with my 2S homebuilt to 300+ to carry 3 of these cheapies (which aren't even cheaper if this is what you get)

I've tried Turnigy, Nanos, Zippy and what not.

The two brands, imho, that beats them all is the Wild Scorpion and Grayson Gold lines from Grayson Hobby. Extremely good quality and I have yet to experience any puffing up with these.

All my HK batts had a very short lifespan, for some reason.

All the nano tech batteries I bought PUFFED! Now I buy China Hobby Line. They have performed well, although some are starting to show age, but I have nothing to compare them to. For a while, Gens Ace was always out of stock. Now that has changed I may give them a shot on my next purchase.

ditto

I just tried a new pack of 2650 nanos and had the same experience. I didn't expect Thunder Power, but I sure expected a lot more than the old 20C bats I've had for a couple of years. I'm very disappointed.
