WINDBURNER Pilot’s Thread

This thread is for Windburner owners to share their experiences: anything and everything Windburner related.
I wanted a fast plank which was easy to build and just as fun and easy to fly for dynamic soaring. It started off as a 40” plane with a lost foam fuselage. From the very first Windburner I realised I had something special. So I made a plug for a fuse and increased the wing size to 48”. The wing was made from a plastic laminate material which is a skinny laminate of 0.5 mm. It flew so well that it broke the 48” tailless world record. So then I decided to make a hollow moulded wing version. From then on, the Windburner has gone from strength to strength. I’ve refined it to make it faster and faster over time and so far it has broken not only the 48” world record but holds the outright world record for a tailless aircraft. A special thanks to Tim and Ezza: without their input the Windburner wouldn’t be what it is today: thanks.

The fastest recorded speed for the Windburner in Australia at the moment is Leo Yu at 250 mph on 26 May 2012 at Dungog, NSW.
The Windburner today has evolved into a CNCed wing with the original Windburner air foils cleaned up by Peter Wick: thanks Peter. It now has a foiled tail and I call it the Windburner Mark III.

My 269 was at Wainui, NZ. Weight: 2.3kg, MKS 6125minis, 4.8v eneloop 2000mah, AR7000 DSM2 RX
285 was with a NZ made replacement fuse, original repaired wing after a 250mph crash. No ballast, weight 1.7kg, same radio gear.
My new Burner Mk3 is still un-flown... waiting for that BIG day...

Noteworthy points on weight from my experiences...
My heavy Burner at 2.3 kg took a while to wind up, like a kinetic, but held speed better while waiting for a gust. Took a bit to accelerate due to weight...
My repaired burner at 1.7kg, did 285... It really picked up speed quick, but also lost it again when wind speed decreased. This may be the way to go if you fly in a place that gets short period gusts. Asto's heavy burner on the same day at about 2.2kg, only managed 241mph. It seemed too heavy and never really accelerated. It stayed between 220 and 240 for most of the flight.
A heavy burner needs to be flown in large, smooth, consistent rad orbits to enable best section efficiency throughout the lap, the lighter burners have no problems banging a sharp turn.
Most of all, the heavier they are, the harder they are to land. Keep that in mind.
Overall, I LOVE the Burners!

Great thread Kevin. It has been really fun to watch and be involved. The Windburner really pushed the speeds up for planks. A huge success, congrats Kevin!
Wow Alex, your 285mph Windburner was only 1.7kgs! I have to agree completely with everything you said. A lighter burner can really bang off the shear and accelerate. My heaviest burner was 2.4kgs and it loved a round circuit with gentle elevator input. I have a new heavy one to build but I think I might keep it lighter maybe 1.7 to 2kgs.
One of my favorites, I love flying my Windburner when conditions are good for ds'ing.

The other local Burner Pilot loved his burner. Only a light glass at 1.3kg, but survived so many crashes and enjoyed a lot of airtime. Pushed his PB up almost every time he flew it! It had MKS6125s minis and 4.8v Eneloop 2000.
I did 225 with it at 1.3kg early in the day before i went 269 with my heavy.
