What do we do in our "Real Life".

Always curious about us as a group, I think it would be interesting to know what we did when we're not flying planes or tabbing on the computer...

I'm guessing there aren't many lawyers or doctors or hairdressers...Most of us probably have something to do with electronics, aviation or both...some students...many retired...

I'll start...

I'm a former helicopter pilot, currently teaching/writing...

Yes, People still have TV's repaired. It's getting more difficult though. Mostly large screens. The smaller sizes are mostly not cost effective. I advise my customers to purchase a extended warranty on the new LCD, Plasma and DLP TV's as non warranty repair can easily be not cost effective.

I began my career working on mainframe computers as a field engineer. That was back in the days when we sometimes worked down to the component level and the components were transistors.

The company went down the tubes after 21 years and I got laid off about a year before the final collapse. I spent most of the next six years freelancing and temping, doing database programming and computer graphics. As kids started coming out of college with computer skills, work got slower and I went back to hardware, working for the Postal Service as an ET on mail sorting machines.

ET stands for Electronic Technician, and basically I am a mechanic who can use an oscilloscope (an spel it tu) if called upon.

Most of the work is like being a pit crew on a racer in an endless race.

I've been flying RC for about 45 years, with a few lapses, also flew full scale, light planes and mostly sailplanes but not for the past 25 years.

Two favorite non-RC sports were whitewater kayaking and flying sailplanes.

I grew up in gramps' mechanic shop. That's what got me started tinkering. He always had plenty of stuff to tinker with out in the junk pile. After school I joined the Navy as a jet mechanic and worked on the A4 Skyhawk. After that, auto mechanic, chainsaw mechanic, and then onto what I've done for the last 25 years, which is manufacturing car batteries.

Laugh Out Load... I knew you would start something like this scrtsqrl! Well I'll take a shot at this since my life is actually pretty boring in reality. I own and operate a busy cafe since 1994 and it wasn't enough (boring work) so I also started a importing business with my Japanese wife (JMS Technologies LTD.). We started out importing cell phone accessories and then unique vehicles from Japan by the 45 foot container loads. I also build, sell and install PC base video surveillance for commercial and residential application (since 2003) where I spend most of my time with former NHL hockey players who are now building subdivisions/high rise buildings and restaurant chain owners. My present project and in the works with former NHL hockey players (adding to my full job line) is creating alternative fuel like biodiesel and hydrogen extraction units to fuel our gas cars. I enjoy experiment in different things that are challenging and never afraid to take it on.

BTW scrtsqrl.... My new BOSSPOD design didn't work out as good as the old design (did a quick flight this morning). Then one I gave you is still a more stable platform

I'm sure you'll work it out.

The next time I fly, it will be with the one you gave me! I'll post pictures on the install later.

Thanks again.

Hmmm...let's see...

In order:
Seafood chef; fast-food manager; computer accounting for a mobile home dealership; screen printer; cabinet maker; truck driver; US Coast Guard as an ET; ATM repair tech; satellite engineer in Burbank; and my current position (10 years) as a Broadcast Engineer for the FOX Television Network.
I have a Private Pilot's License but am not current, and I was building a Sonex in my garage at one time.
Flew RC a lot 10 years ago, then stepped away from the hobby for some time. Back then everybody laughed at the one guy at our field who flew electrics. And NOBODY was doing FPV, although I really wanted togive it a try.
My "reawakening" into RC started last December when my father bought me a micro-heli. I have several of them now, some stock, most others heavily modified with brushless setups and other gizmos. In searching for advice on the helis I found RCG, and then it was just a matter of time before I found the EZ Star and all of the new FPV gear. Things have really changed in 10 years!
