Radio Control

Does anyone have any opinions about 2.4 GHz controllers? Are they really "alot" better then the standard crystal changing controllers for model boat sailing.

If you want to sail alone, then it does not matter. The main differences are the long aerial, vs the short one and the non-2.4 may work better if you have a carbon fiber hull..

But if you want to sail with others, and especially if you want to race, then no comparison - 2.4 wins hands down.

FM Transmitters are fine.
It's just that you'd be a fool to pay actual money for one now. If you have one, use it.

If you have to buy a system. Buy a 2.4ghz system. I recommend Genuine Spektrum transmitters, with Orange compatible receivers.

If buying new, 2.4GHz. RXs with two antennas work better than those with one. Signal pick up is less directional (something mathematical to do with spiral waveforms getting into places other signals can't reach, or magic). If you already have an old school type and the crystals to go with it, use it.

Agree with the others, if you have a radio. system already use that untill it needs to be replaced then buy a 2.4. I have found out that half the sailors in my group have switched over to a 2.4 system so using my older fm system is fine as there a less chances for someone else using the same freq.. So why spend money on a system untill you have to,spend it on a new boat instead.

I have a Spectrum DX6i as well as AM and FM radios. They all work great and give no problems. Once you get that antenna out of your face though, it is a little annoying using the older radios. Sailing with your buddies seems to be a game of weaving that antenna around everyone as we follow the sail boats on the course. I like the ability of binding up to ten models on the one radio, it will be the last radio you need to buy. A new receiver, servos, battery pack, and the new boat is ready to go. The radio will also remember the parameters you put in for each model. For regattas there is no checking of who is on what channel, just go. For which radio to use, as long as you are out there RC boating, it's all GOOD!

2.4 can also be used on airplanes, and cars. So if you do any other rc stuff you are good to go.
