Delmar Benjamin, Gee Bee,Moffet Field 1999

In case any Gee Bee fans missed it, this is one of his best demo flights. What an amazing man and his machine.

Fantastic Video.

My father and a family friend were great followers of Delmar's Gee Bee. They often dropped in to the Creswell Airport to watch engine test runs and see how progress was going on the construction.

Delmar flew that plane way beyound what it was intended for, the video shows that well. He is a very skilled pilot, I wounder what he is up to these days after the retirement of the Gee Bee.

Amazing. And to think, back in 71 I lived in Sunnyvale and could see those hangers from the balcony of my apartment.

Never mind that the little Caudron 460 with an in-line six of half the GeeBee's displacement could outrun it, it couldn't have sounded anywhere near that good! Radials just sound righteous - even when powering a left-over rum-runner's whiskey barrel!

Here's a write-up about Benjamin in a local newspaper , mentions his experience flying the Gee Bee unaware of the general shutdown of aviation on 9-11:

It is amazing what a couple more years development did in those days. One year you have a world record holder, then next you aren't in the running.

Of course Caudron was a major aircraft mfg and the Gee Bee's were made by a few guys in their hanger. Add to that the american fascination with bigger and bigger engines, and air cooling.

I have a hard time deciding whether a Merlin or radial sound better

Was it just me, or were there sparks right at the very end of the video from a prop strike or something? Look close, almost like they're coming off the wing of the Cessna or what have you, but they're there.
