1/72 Modern Ocean Towing/Salvage Tug

Was bored out of my skull on weekend could'nt work on USS Long Beach, so I got out the graph paper and plans for Semco's big tug Salvanguard and started drawing up a profile view, then drew up hull lines ( guestimated )
Monday traced keel and frames onto a sheet of 7mm x1200mm x 600mm ply and started cutting with the jigsaw!!

Tonight I have been cutting stringers for the tug (which I am calling "Titan" ), the shipyard has been in full swing today with a successful test run of Red boat (no leaks now!! ) and construction of test tank for Long Beach. Plus I tidy'd the shed (and killed about 8000000 Spiders of various types!!) they wont be nibblin on me again

Cheers Bruce

That should have plenty of pull to it. Are you going to build the crane shown in the GA or are you going to build a more specialized version for lake duties?

Crane wise I'm thinking it will be some sort of extendable jobby, using a long bolt an nut to extend it, rather than have a cable on it with a releaseable hook carrying the towline loop from main winch. simply pull up along side target , swing & extend crane over desired towing point, release loop (over a bollard hopefully), slowly move off extending towline.
Be nice if it works!

Well, I was thinking...one thing you could do is install a hidden magnet in under the bow of your other boats and put a scale metal hook on your crane. That way your crane still looks right for your tug and it may take some of the guess work out of trying to lasso a bollard. Then you can pull up drop the hook toward the bow and it should snap right to it. Just an idea though...

or combine both ideas.... put the magnet under the bollard with a metal ring on the end of the tow line, the magnet alone might not be strong enuff 2 take the load......Hmmm......gears in brain spinnin...

Thx Nic got ya Pm.

Kaptain - I'm happy with all of em' except 1st 4 bow frames not happy with lower profile on frames 4 & 3 redoing them 2mora! so they give a better curvature leading into frame 2.
all up Tug has only cost about $20 in wood so no dramas.....yet!

Patmat - I have extensively read your report on gearboxes its a great read! I'd really like the MFA pulley drive but just 2 expensive!

Cheers ALL Bruce
