LiPo meets firey end via BB Gun...

Always wondered what a "vent with flames" looks like.

Had a 2S1100 pack that was inadvertatly charged at 3S (thank God this didn't happen whilst charging) and didn't work any more.

Had a BB Gun.

Started pumping shots into it until it burst. First shot and it started swelling. Only got 8-10 shots into to it before it erupted.

Took pics as quick as I could. Didn't see any flames, but could hear and feel them.

Whole thing was over in 30 seconds after it started. Seems a Pyrex dish would contain it.

Do you have a LiPo hunting permit? I'm guessing not as the 1100's are exempt from the hunt- you can only take down the 2100 and larger.

I did

This was a little 2S1100 pack that would "take a charge" but not provide any flight performance for more than a minute or two with out drooping down farther and faster than any LiPo I've ever flown.

I have only owned LiPos. Never owned a heavy pack since I started two years ago with the TigerMoth. Have 8-10 LiPos now and have discarded an additional 4 or 5 since.

Always wondered "what would happen" durring catastrofic (sp?) failure. Not sure I'd like to see one of my bigger, proper working 3S2600 packs go up.

Nice work Coo, I've got a 2200 3s pack thats losing its voltage retention under load. Hmmmm.... So how bad was it? I almost had a 2500 3s pack go up in my car It shorted and I burnt myself trying to unplug it. Got it out, but no visible damage to the battery. Still works after testing. Hate to see how big a boom that woulda made Next time I'm over, maybe I'll bring the 2200 pack along

Oh great...now you guys think I'm a LiPo disposal site?!

No thanks.

That one little 2S1100 pack was violent. It didn't "blow up", just puffed and "vented with flames". That is the defacto expression and a pretty applicable one too. Went from a swelling pack to rupture, flames, a LOT of foul smelling smoke to crispy aluminium in 10-15-20 seconds.

DONT let it happen in the car, basement, garage!

I guess we could do another one or two out in the backyard (five acreas). I'd like to try to short one out and see what happens. Not really much more dangerous than fireworks or handguns (both of which we do a lot of around here).
That said, I'd put these LiPos in the same catagory as fireworks and handguns=plenty dangerous!

In scientific circles it would be called "Research".

It's P.C.

Research.... LOL! I saw a video of a guy who stuck his lipo in the charger and charged until it blew. Lots of flames. It was cool!

Coo,

You'd have to be crazy to do such a dumb thing!

When I did it, I used a pellet gun. Got some of it on video.
