Careful!
HV160 up in flames

Was setting up my EDF for my plane.

Bought an advertised as unused ESC from someone on RC groups a while ago

plugged in 8S pack on the Castle ICE2 HV160

Everything plugged in, slowly raise the throttle, nothing, then buzzing noise then whooosh, flames coming out the ESC.

Pulled the battery packs off it. Went to unplug it from the motor and the black lead pulled right out, probably de-soldered from the heat

Smoked for a little bit, stunk up the cellar

Only good news is that it wasn't in the plane when it happened

I checked the motor with a different ESC and it works fine.

So time to get a new ESC I guess

Somethings not right. That should have worked unless your motor has a short or was blocked from turning???

+1

I bought an ice160 at the LHS last year at 75% off the price then found out there was a recall on the ice160. I only paid $80. for it so I thought I would have to paid a balance... Nope Castle sent me a brand new edge 160 at no charge and a neck strap as well. Great Customer Service every time I'm sure they will help you out!

Ken I know how it feels I was plugging in a new esc mounted on the plane with the cowl removed a few weeks back and I saw a red light and smoke coming from it so I unplugged it and the red light went out and the smoke stopped but the esc is not working at all now. There is no red light on the esc it was one of the components turning red hot it even melted a hole In The Heat shrink.
Time to send it back although it had never been run before it is an older one and installed in that plane maybe 5 years before the plane was finished. CC 85 HV

Well its all packed up to be sent back to Castle for "repair"
Its $155 to repair out of warranty, still cheaper than a new one

I'll cross my fingers and hope the replace it for free

I had a CC HV160 do that to me also. It was a few years ago. The replacement worked just fine. I remember they stated a manufacturer spec change in some component caused the failures in a batch.

The YEP 120 FETs actually can do 140 on 12s EASY with heatsink, air and AFW turned on...

YEP isn't perfect , it will not survive an arching of the motor connections or even a short between any of the 3 rails ... I use the SOLID (none of the banana connector) 4 and 5mm connectors and tape around the connectors with mine to prevent this.

For the price I've not had to worry one bit though connecting to a pack

The only thing may survive the 3 rails short is the good old HobbyWing 120hv. I had it happen before, melted all 3 motor wires, smoke coming out from the plane, and the ESC got extremely hot, but it survived.... and had many flights without problem afterwards. That thing is close to bulletproof.
