IMPBA Crackerbox Rule Changes for 2015

Large scale gas-powered crackerboxes see some rule changes for next season.

Splash

The IMPBA attempts to level the playing field

For many years, the crackerbox class has been open to highly modified Zehoah G260 and similarly sized mills putting out upwards of 6 horsepower and seeing speeds in the upper 50's. Many purists would be unable to compete with stock engines; this is how the class started in the IMPBA. But recently announced rule changes for the 2015 season reel the faster guys back in, and force them to run bone stock G260's. Similar to the Thunderboat class, the crackerbox class will be allowed stock canisters, or tuned pipe exhaust. Strakes and ride pads are eliminated, and so are no-trip tabs and skegged struts... basically removing the items that transform the squirrely crackerbox into a decent handling hull, capable of turning sharp and fast without rolling over.

I've never been crazy about all of the classes that require stock Zen 260's only but I'm out-numbered there.
The rule changes should get the class closely back where it was before, ill-handling boats that you have to drive, not just point-and-shoot.
Again, it's also going to come back to how many classes a race can handle in a day It's hard to find races running Jersey Skiff's now in the area and gas scale hydro is a new class that quite hasn't taken off yet. There's also the gas OB tunnels. It might have to come down to 2-day events, nitro one day and gas the next.

The Crackerbox class was just another mono class. With full mod engines and special trim tabs, these things could run with all other monos at 60+MPH.
You too could be competitive if you had $600+ for an engine...

I am all for the new rules. They bring back a drivers class. These boats don't turn well, and with a stock Zenoah 260, they won't top 45-48 mph.
No matter how much money you throw at them, they will not turn or go very fast.

We ran only stock engines in our ABox Crackerboxes this past season and had a ball!

Thunderboat is a huge class, and part of that is the limited money and engine required.
