My experience (with a much smaller model, in 1978) was that the fences are CRITICAL. So,yes, add them.

BTW, are you going to add the small inboard wing fences?
I hadnít decided yet. The airfoil I am using is a lot more docile than the one Parky used. Raising the ailerons for glide makes for a good amount of effective washout. Iíve used this on some R/C jets with good results. My engineer on the project Mike Oser is telling me that at the RNs that these models operate at I would need to enlarge the fences and move them outboard even with the root of the aileron for them to be effective.
Of course this would be non-scale. Iím considering something in-between scale and what Mike is suggesting. It depends on how much time I have before heading out to Blackrock. I am making progress but still much to do. Iím almost done with the graphics.

Was he ever! I'm sure better photos are coming, but here's what I got.

A most impressive flight, and everything went exactly per plan. He even found the nose gear hatch after the flight.

Very cool. Did he get much altitude, I wasn't sure what the final weight and motor he used were.

Awesome project. What top speed did you predict ?

I am still amazed you guys can handle the CG shift with these rear motor birds. With the CG far enough forward for decent launch stability I find the glide to be boring, as it is so nose heavy (of course my stuff is little compared to this monster).

I remember him looking for 1,300'. Would be interesting to know the actual number. He flew it at a fairly shallow angle under thrust--I think altitude as such wa a low priority.

Well Iím finally back from Blackrock. I now understand the saying that ďYou can get the men off the playa but youíll never get the playa off the men.Ē I have a lot to clean up. To say Iím pleased with the flight of the X-2 would be an understatement. The flight went off as planned and Iíll share all the details in upcoming posts. It was nice to meet Ari and I want to thank him for his help and support during the flight.
The launch was on a 2450 NS Gorilla K-470.
Telemetry on the transmitter from the X-2 showed a maximum speed of 166 mph and 1142 feet.
Iíll post the video from the cockpit cameras and a good video of the entire flight once I have a chance to process it. Hereís a short clip of just the launch and landing.
