Dump Scow Device

Folks,

I am going to build a large scale model of a V-Pocket Dump Scow, to go with my scale Tug.

The Scow had 5-Pockets with dump doors on the bottom.

These scows were used to haul dredged sand from the Harbour, out to be dumped in Lake Erie.

These dump doors were opened and closed via a chain and cable. The chain and cable was controlled by a device, that could be tripped, to allow the doors to free fall open, to dump a load and could be closed using an air gun to wind up the cable and chain.

These devices looked something like a car rear differential.

My issue, other then the few poor pictures attached, I don't have good details of these devices.

Would anyone have any drawings or clearer pictures of what these device looked like, such that I can scratch build the ones required for my model scow??

Please see several photos attached.

As I need 5 for each scow and I want to build two scows, I may try 3-D printing the parts to make these, if I can find a decent drawing or pictures.

Have a Look here, its a simple lines drawing that might help with some of the conceptual work. Do you know if there are any barges still in existence that might be visited and photographed? I am in Ontario and might be able to detour if I knew where to detour to...
Should be cool barges if you can work out all the details
Cheers

G-O,

Thanks for your reply and offer.

To the best of my knowledge there are none of the PW Scows left in existence.

Of coincidence, is that the PW Dredge that goes with my Tug and loaded these scows sank in 1906 (raised in 1909) just West of your location, just before Port Hope.

G-O,

Maybe of interest to you;

The 4th picture above, of the two scows being towed, is taken out in Lake Ontario in the late Fall of 1949.

The PW Tug Hercules is towing the PWD-117 (Dredge) which in turn is towing the two PW Scows.

The outfit is headed into Toronto Harbour, to lay up at the foot of Younge Street, for the Winter of '49-'50.

{PW = Public Works = Public Works Canada}

Nice bit of old engineering in the three patents.

I thought about building a split dump barge, but had second thoughts as
to what and where I would be dumping stuff.

Umi,

My plan is to build the Scow; load four pockets with foam, topped with sand, to simulate Harbour bottom sand and silt.

Then to detail the fifth pocket, but not actually have it operational.
