Reprogram a brushless ESC to get a brushed ESC with no delays / RC Switch

Hi, I have made a new firmware for the Turnigy Plush 10A brushless ESC (old type) to make it into a no delay, instant reverse, fast response, forward and reverse brushed ESC for RC crawler cars, tanks and other skid steer vehicles. It has a switching frequence of ca 16kHz, so it does not make that annoying whining sound.

Other ESC's can probably be used for higher current capability.

It currently does not have arming, LVC or overtemp protection, but I can add that if there is a interest in it.

Source code is attached. **EDIT**: There is a newer version later in the thread.

Homemade Brushed ESC for crawlers and tanks. (1 min 8 sec)

Hi Rolf,
This will come in handy for a future project Thanks for posting!
Just FYI Steve also did something like this with Silabs processor fitted ESCs here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...0&postcount=13
Cheers,
Jim

Please, can you post a wiring diagram of how the ESC is connected to the motor?

Thank you.

Edited: A brushed motor has two poles, so I am confused.

Hi.
That's great Rolf. I have bought an Tunigy 20A Brushed ESC for my mini car project, but it has no reverse and it is very hard to control the card without reverse. So I was searching for this conversion for long time.

my question: will your firmware work with Tunigy Plush 25A and/or Tunigy Plush 6A and/or best option for me TowerPro Mag8 (30A)

thanks

Ok, I have not seen that one. But anyway, I like to make things myself

The motor is connected to the two half bridges closest to the battery side of the ESC. (two wires closest to the capacitor)

It should work on a 6A. About the two others I do not know since I do not have the schematics for them.

I'm planning to take a look at the plush 30A. Maybe all the plushes has the same hardware pinout?

There might be a problem with ESCs that use FET drivers as they have a bootstrap capacitor that needs re-charging all the time?

It will only be a problem when using an all-NFET ESC where the charge pump is driven by the half bridge's output. (HK F-20, F-30 and others).

Whether it uses a driver chip or not is not important.

It will be possible to use an all-NFET ESC if it has a separate charge pump, like the ginormous tower pro 40A heli.

You can get a bit of an idea about compatible hardware by looking at http://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/c...jU1YzdBQkZZRlE ... if they work with tgy.hex, they should be compatible.

Pretty cool project. I was looking for a brushed forward/backward ESC to reanimate a old RC fisher boat with Mabucchi 300 for my son. And was amazed to see that the market decreased dramatically. You only get some overpriced car ESC. I will test after vacations on a RedBrick 25A.

btw, if you want a crawler brushless ESC, you can enable RC_PULS_REVERSE in my tree and put it on any flight board

the real question is what can you do with the extra FET channel when using the brushless ESC board as a brushed ESC... dimmable headlights?

I was thinking using the extra channel for back-up light.
