Hello all,
I've read this entire thread, thanks for all the great info on this sweet plane Arxangel and others!
Got my Ranger from Cambriahobby and it had some extra items arrive in the box; a 12V step down regulator, a volt meter with low voltage alarm, and a World Cup flashlight/bottle-opener/key-chain. Anyway, I still need to select a motor. I'm getting the ET Vector which works up to 6S so I don't want to go higher than that. What do you guys think about these 6S motors? I don't have that calc program some of you have mentioned so I don't know what pitch propeller to get.

Scorpion SII-3020-780 V2 800W
Turnigy Aerostar 4340-500kv 900w (liking this one)
Turnigy L3040A-480G 1000W
Turnigy 3025-850kv 1300W Helicopter Motor

Arxangel, you mentioned using Tiger MT2820-7830KV 668W motor, I found a chart for this at 5S using an 11x4.7 and 13x4 APC props. Both of those max out the wattage, I don't know what a 10 inch prop would do or what pitch to get if I go with this motor. I haven't even seen charts for the other motors so same boat there but at least they can handle more watts. What do you think?

Lazer707....the 800, 900 would need a larger prop than the stock Ranger EX can take to be setup correctly. You should look for something in the range of 1000 - 1200 which will allow you to use either 3s or 4s with 9x prop or 10x prop. BTW, it is tough to find a motor in this range....all out of stock in a lot of vendor sites.

Hmmm..... Arxangel said the best efficiency for longer flights would not come from 4S with this plane but I don't have the experience or knowledge to know. I found ecalc (yeah!) and have been plugging in different motors/props. I'm noticing with with too high a pitch prop it says

"The airflow at the propeller blade will stall. Therefore the static thrust and max. current may not be reached."

Now I'm thinking 5S, perhaps Turnigy D3548/6 790KV with 10x6 prop. Ecalc says 2619g static thrust and 611 watts. Just noticed Hobbyking says its max thrust is 1650g. I'm so confused, lol.

The T-motor for 6S I have is the 830Kv one, so I think you've added an extra "7" in the Kv rating, and I've flown it on 6S and a 10x7SF prop, and it comes down ice cold, so I wouldn't worry about overloading it, unless you plan on flying full throttle all the way.

When it comes to eCalc, and I've said this before, there isn't a single setup that I've tested there, who's results have turned out to be correct. For me eCalc has gotten everything wrong - multi-rotors and planes alike, so I tend to not to use, or trust it.

That aside, using a SF prop would ensure that you will have ample thrust even in those tough situations and at low RPM, the E props would need a lot more speed to become efficient, and generally lack static thrust.

As for 4S, at least on my Ranger efficiency has not been optimal - 8S and 10S setups yielded much better results, although I have not yet tested a 6S setup on the Ranger.
