Visibility of Transparent Red film

Got a new balsa glider ready for assembly and debating film cover color.
To me, the transparent red film I have on hand is beautiful on the ground but I'm wondering about it's visibility in the air. All my current gliders have black coverings on the bottom of the wing.

Will I be sorry with transparent red when she gets way up there?

Two old timers and two sailplanes in transparent red, never any trouble seeing them at altitude. I had my 3.2 metre Pulsar in transparent red to 2700 ft AGL but at that point is was just a speck anyhow.

I had this one up to 1500 feet a couple weeks ago and for this 70 year old kid, I had no problem.

Transparent Red on my open framework models is the go-to color ... but I see red best anyway.

While I love the look of transparent red, I made the mistake of covering the entire wing of my Chrysalis, top and bottom, with it. At a distance, the plane is visible but it is nearly impossible to tell if it is turning toward me or away. While not as impressive on the ground, the Spirit Elite that I covered with bright opaque yellow on the top and insignia blue on the bottom is much easier to distinguish which way it is turning.

I use transparent red top & bottom with solid white from the spar to the LE on top only.
Easy to see & so far no orientation issues.

Red with yellow, both transparent, is the best combination for my eyes. Worst is violet.

I highly recommend transparent red or other transparent DARK colors such as purple, blue, black.

For me, the absolute worse color for a sailplane is yellow; almost invisible at altitude.

Conversely, the yellow contrast on blue sky is the best of all colors ! Ask a photographer
Or, check my picture above

For me, it's not so much about simply seeing the plane, but being able to see small changes in attitude. I must have different colors top/bottom of the main wing, or else I can't tell if it's coming or going when far away. I have a 100" Aquila that has transparent red on all surfaces. I will be changing the wing bottom to non transparent black before it flies again. My favorite for orientation is white top, black bottom, but the transparent red is so good looking I'll leave the top as is and see how it goes.

For what it's worth, the human eye is most sensitive to a wavelength of about 555 nanometers, which is solidly in the middle of the range we call "yellow".

I always do a different color on the right wing tip section like the black and white checks of my OlyIII above. That way I can tell if it's going away from me or coming towards me. Sometimes I do it on the bottom side of the wing only and sometimes I do it on the top and bottom, but it's always on the right wing. If the checks or contrasting color is on the right, I know it's going away from me. If the contrasting color is on the left I know it's coming towards me.
