Will a 6mm depron airfoil perform?

Well, it started out as a joke. I like Depron as material and often my friends like to call me the Depronator . For indoor there are these flatfoamies, often 3mm-Depron planes that actually float, often high-alpha, through the air. What if... a flat wing was built, 6mm-Depron-airfoil (actually none, just the flat plate), would it fly and perform like a wing with a curved or KF-airfoil?

Well, let's find out...

As a starting point, I lay down some 6mm Depron plate and start cutting. I like to design during the build and I use a large ruler and a sharp hobby-knife.

Then I apply some roofing (Carbon-fibre) and glasstissue, but as little as possible. The wing should not be too heavy. No carbon-rod will be applied.

Some ultra-cheap Mylars will keep the roovings and GFK-tissue in place. Some weight will press the Mylars down. As little epoxy as possible will be applied.

Some glassfibre reinforced balsa will be used as verticle stabilizer, but I like to keep 'm small as to reduce drag. (We are talking high-performance here :-))

The RC Powers setup will hopefully keep the wing in the air (D2826-6 2200kV on 3s with a 6x4 prop and a 2200mAh 3s LiPo).

In an effort to keep drag to an absolute minimum, I let the servo's sink into the wing. I hope this is visible on the image above, The I used some glassfibre-tissue to cover the servos and guide the airflow gently over them.

Lean and mean, will this foamy fly. No high-alpha (will fail anyway), only realflight was the bet.

DutchRC - Nick flies his WingThing again :D - few tweaks applied :) (8 min 13 sec)

As I kept a safe distance, my friend Nick (aka The Stig) flew the wing last Sunday. Please feel welcome to comment,
