Cool
Screaming 1000W Zagi

Ok, here’s the current power setup:

Zagi XS Pro Kit 48” (chopped down to 40”)
Mega 16/15/3 w/ Heat Sink
E-Flite 40 amp ESC w/ BEC
Kokam 3s1p 2000 mAh 15c LiPo (+1 spare)
5.25 X 4.75 APC Prop

Specs:

Flying Weight: 25 oz
Current Draw: ~30 amps

Results:

Top Speed: 80-90 MPH

Problem:

It takes too much time to build up that speed and the vertical climb rate is poor. So basically, I want more power.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I've talked to several guys at the local hobby shop and they all say different things. One said I'm using the wrong prop but I've metered a dozen different props (including the one he suggested - APC 5x5) and the 5.25 X 4.75 gets me the most bang without exceeding the 30 amp limit that the motor and battery have. Another guy said that I need to buy the Mega 16/25/3 motor w/ 7x7 APC prop, which I'm sure would throw off the cg on my zagi but no big deal if it would do the trick. And yet another guy recommended that I toss the E-Flite 40 amp ESC and get the Phoenix 45 or 60, then run my two lipos in series making a 6s1p 2000 mAh 15c LiPo. But I'm not sure if that would blow up my zagi or not. Sounds a bit hot.

Has anyone tried any of these suggestions or can you think of other ways to get this baby doing unlimitted vertical?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

~Brad

i have a Zagi Tazz...i think its the same thing. and this is the setup i have:

Zagi brushless motor (one that comes with the Tazz)
Caste Creations Phoenix 45 amp brushless speed control
HS-81 servos (2 of them)
3S1P 20C 2500mah lipoly pack
The props i use are the carbon zagi props...not sure what the dimension is, i can check tonite when im home to see.

I pull between 35-40 amps i think when we did the wattmeter check, its been almost a full flying season since i checked last.

Ive also looked at upgrading to the smaller prop.

I havent clocked it in a dive or high speed pass but id say its in the 70-80mph range, might be more in a dive or downwind pass, i should check! . And it can pull vertical for quite a distance, not unlimited but id lose visibility of it before it would stall. So that works for me hehe

stock tazz setup is an astro 020 cc 25 1700 or 1800 nimh and 5x5 carbon prop. They say with a 3s2p 4200mah lipo, you should do 100+ easy

i have the mega 16/15/4 with a thunderpower 3s2p 4200ma lipo, the stock 5x5 zagi prop was ok but i now have a APC 6x4. the battery makes a huge difference. my wing is a zagi 60 and it has lots of power and i get 15 min flight times only taking 80 percent out of the pack.

I run a Mega 16/15/3
Apc 5.1x4.5
Jedi Opt 90 esc
5s TP Extreme 2070 lipo.
Seperate Rx. battery.
I get 900-960 watts and draw 62-65 amps.
The only thing I worry about is if the prop can take it!

Parallel the 2 packs and run an apc 5.5 x 4.5 , this set up will over amp on the test bench. in the air the amps load will drop, and wings have good cooling for the motor. the heat sink help also. in any case, the motor should come back cool. this has alot more thrust. but you must parallel the packs you need more discarge. on the bench you'll pull about 38 amps.

I looked up the cost of the Mega motors and whoah they are not cheap! Sorry to get off subject but can anyone point me in the right direction of a motor out there in the 2000-3000Kv range to push a zagi that ISN'T expensive? Light, fast, and cheap...

Megas are cheap!
You DO want it to last, right?
It's hard to find a more affordable, reliable, and powerful motor to push a Zagi.

38 amps? I'd be surprised.
I'd say half again as much...at least.

I guess Megas aren't too bad a price

MEGA ACn 16/15/3 - Speed 480 size Brushless 3T $84.50
MMC2800 LittleScreamers 2800 Kv Brushless $ 48.70

Is this littlescreamer comparable to the 16/15/3 ?
Still learning about motors/props/batteries

That price is more like it for my taste. As I get more electric experience, I can get fancy with the expensive motors. Thanks for link klique

Not.
I suspect foul play here.

Wow! The Mega 16/15/3 can handle 65 amps? I thought it's max was 30 amps. Have you clocked this setup?

You can buy factory repaired 16/15/3 at about half price from Mega Motors directly.

I broke the wire at back plate on a 3 yr. old one, sent it in and asked for a repaired motor. I think it cost about $55.00, and it looks like it did when I first bought it from another dealer. I haven't ran it yet as I bought a 1107/2.5Y Neu Motor for more power in my application. Just another option for y'all.

I was running that 3 yr. old on 4S1P 2100, mini box at 6 to 1 ratio, 15X7 APC E prop at 35 amps, with heat sink, but it ran probably 75 flights before I nosed in the plane and broke the wire. The Mega's are so tough...
