I used 4 small flat magnets. One magnet was too low. My Bomb appears to be splitting with ease. I won't get to flight test it for some time though as I'm headed out of town for work.

How much weight do you think that release mechanism can handle?

I have a 100 inch wing that I would like to be able to mount a 48 inch wing underneath...

I would think it could handle the weight. The release is simply two barbed pegs that slide back and forth.

As the saying goes - there's one way to find out ....

Keep us posted.

Bomb on a Stick

I put my Bomb System on my Das Plas-Stick (DPS) SPAD. There is enough clearance underneath to allow ROG - much better than hand tossing my Wing or Easy Star. I upgraded the motor from a 400 to a 450 size.

Mounted two of these under the wings of v7 P-51. Had a problem of one of them opening up and separating in flight. The half of which I lost. Will be painting insides fluorescent orange. Just need some good advice for keeping it together loaded with flour until it drops. I've heard tape, rubber bands and now magnets. Anything else?

Used the system two times on my Dynam Hawker Tempest.

First time one half separated in mid flight but I found it again.

Second time it did open but no "smoke"

I used flour in a plastic wrapping. Might have to lose the wrapping.

KM

Update. Lost half of one of my bombs again today in flight. The pins just did not hold fast.
Gave the remaining half as present to a friend who was with me today xD.

Need to get another bomb.

I have been playing around with the Quanum RC bomb units for several years now and I must say they are nice but I feel there are a number of issues. As stated before the plastic does not hold up mechanically ,and the modifications others have made do help. I have tried these as well. My problem is this, you can put a fair amount of powder into these ,but the end result is not much more powder in the air. In fact a number of times I have gone to the dropped bomb on the field only to find most of the power is still in the bomb halves. Not only that but the increase weight makes these bombs more dangerous if they were to hit someone.
So I began to look at the Quanum to see if I can produce a safer, lighter unit that can produce an airburst above the ground utilizing less talc powder. Above all this mod makes the unit considerably safer if it were to hit someone accidently on the head. I figure it would be closer to being hit with a tennis ball verses something greater due to the tip shape of the quanum unit(plus loaded with lots of talc or flour).
All parts are readily available and it takes only minutes(20min) to modify . Unfortunately the bomb will have a red nose cone. Maybe the boys in Quanum China or Hobbyking can model this with an olive drab silicone nose cone (scale) . I will show how I put this together. First this is what it looks like. I will go thru the steps I did and hopefully it will get some conversation going. Tero T in Toronto

First I found all the parts from dollar stores or stores such as U-line and Lee Valley tools.
The key ingredient here is the silicone nose cone. It is extremely soft so that even dropped from low level is will collapse. This also has a parabolic nose shape close to the Quanum nose shape. Also it is almost exact diameter to the Quanum bomb. Only problem is it is red. This item is an egg separator and I found this on the Lee Valley tool website. I have looked at a number of rubber bulbs off ebay and dollar store items(basters) but they tended to be made of rubber and do not collapse as easy. The 3/4 inch tube I purchased from U-LIne and these come with green caps. These are packaging items used to package drill bits etc at hardware stores.
Next is the small drink umbrellas that were purchased from a dollar store as well as some cheap pens (only for the spring). Corks are used and again from the dollar store or Michaels for a package of 10 or more. And finally the front end of the bomb is supported on the inside with a piece of ABS 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 pipe fitting from your local hardware store.

Next Cut off the nose section of the Quanum bombs at the point where the curve of the tip becomes linear. I used a small hobby bandsaw. I touched the end of the cutoff bomb against drum sander to true the end of the two halves.
Go in and dremel out the mounting pins and supports from the front end of the bomb .
Mark and dremel out the back end of the bomb housing 3/4 inch diameter hole
Ok all the hard part is done. Now to assemble the powder holder
