100 + mph Scratchbuilt Foamies Club

The thought came to mind that it might be beneficial for those whose need is speed that we could list the designs and combinations for 100+ mph foamies.

This is a great achievement and the cost for doing so has never been cheaper.

That said, safety should always be a number 1 concern regardless of the construction media.

Let's begin listing the airframes with your system component details. I will keep a list here of accomplishees provided reasonable documentation.

Prime Jet 8 - 32" Ultra

I'll be the first to throw my hat into the ring with the Prime Jet 8 - 32" Ultra. This plane was originally a 21" span model that was a scratchbuilt foamie version of the Multiplex Fun Jet.

I upped the size to be comparable to the Fun Jet Ultra version. This applies only to my version which has gone as much as 112 mph.

Link to plans for the Prime Jet 8 Ultra 32 http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...postcount=1188 or you can get a kit here http://www.kenscadmodels.com/prime-j...-32-ultra.html

1800 mAh 4s Turnigy Nanotech battery http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Lipo_Pack.html - 19.35
Turnigy 11g MG servos http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._11g_0_09.html - $5.20 x 2 = $10.40
Turnigy 65A esc http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...hless_ESC.html - $33.97
Turnigy NTM 28-36 3000 Kv motor (755 watts) http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...00KV_755W.html - $16.99
APC 5x5 propeller http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...5x5_2_pc_.html - $1.41

Not counting the little bits there is $82.12. I can be done cheaper. A suitable esc can be had for $17, but I would suggest a better battery. This one always puffs when hot but flattens back out when it's cool.

For the sake of safety , you could use an onboard GPS logger like this one from Hobbyking :
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html

It will record the fastest speed attained during a flight , without having to do a low pass for radar or doppler .

this has the potential ?... eventually.. ~24" span, 40mm fan, 300 watts, 9oz rtf
Admittedly a crude finish.. it was built purely as a Trainer for a scale version.

I originally envisioned that what is posted here as actually having broken the century mark and a scratchbuilt foamie. No unkind intent here, but if it has not done it, please don't post it. Lets keep it to the point.

Stinky's X-Raycer

Hey guys,
This thread was such a great idea, thanks again Dan and Ken.
I was so pumped when I heard my little RC Speedo chime out
103 Miles Per Hour!
This all started with some bench racing at the local hobby shop,
someone spent $800 on a EDF motor and that's all it took,
Bob stated he was going to hit 150 MPH with his Stryker
and my reply was I am going to exceed 100MPH for under $50( not including radio)
Here are the Stats
Full size Mach 1 X-Raycer, built from RC Groups plans.
1 Sheet Model Plane Foam $3
I cut down a 7 x 6 APC sport (didn't have a 6x6)
zippy 1600 4s 35c
40 amp esc
turnigy 28 26 2200 kv
She's pulls 41amps wide open with this prop
not including radio and receiver the materials for this plane is under $50
There by exceeding my personal challenge to go over a 100MPH for under $50
Thanks Leadfeather,this design is amazing
Thanks Ken for all the power plant speed secrets
I just love this plane, probably one of my fastest: she will do 103 and land at under 3MPH

Here are more specifics:
OK 9261000003 - HobbyKing 40A ESC 4A UBEC $16.69
BK D2826-62200 - D2826-6 2200kv Outrunner Motor
This item is on backorder* $10.21
OK HXT900 - HXT900 9g / 1.6kg / .12sec Micro Servo $5.38
OK HK-121 - Super Gold Thin Odorless CA Glue 1/2 oz .. $7.19
OK APC7x6-E - APC style propeller 7x6-E $0.63
1 sheet Model Plane Foam $3
Packing Tape (Free, from work)
2 pushrods $2
control horns from a wrecked parkzone (value $1.05)
I did not include my radio which is a DX 8 and an AR 400 receiver
the battery was a zippy 1800 mah lipo 4s 35c (about $16) which I did not include either.
I think a 2200 4s 40 c and a graupner 6 x 6 cam speed is what I will be testing with next.
Video is 18 minutes and I have not edit it yet (requires new software)
Doppler file is coming soon.
I think my next project is the smaller plane in the picture with a blue wonder3000kv
The next challenge is 125MPH for under a $100 not including radio or battery!
Ken already shared the power plant for next adventure. Of course this will go in another full size X-Raycer narrowed slightly and modified for straight away speed
Dream big but always
ALWAYS be careful, at these speeds these are no longer toys
they carry an enormous amount of energy and can be very dangerous.
Never ever chince $$$ on your radio gear for these speed trials.

OK I finally figured out how to edit my video
I wouldn't really call this proof, but until I install my gps data logger and go through the motions again. This will have to do.
I hope you approve Ken and Dan

Good job Chris! I think you've got the most miles per hour for the least dollars.
