Graupner moonraker

Since I saw videos of these hugely impractical and ruinously expensive things on eBay I (foolishly) thought "that's the boat for me!". After much hunting about on eBay.de I found one with a seller willing to post.

Here's where I am so far; the mechanicals are all done, jet drives fitted, motors on, esc's connected. She's running a pump to water cool the esc's (which will probably be switchable). There's also a bow thruster. Using two robbe navy 70a brushed esc; one for the steering jets and one for the booster. The bow thruster is running off a 30a robbe esc and the pump with be off a 20a mtroniks jobbie I found in the bits box.

I'll be running her off 3x 8ah 4s lipos to hopefully give a reasonable top speed and decent run times. Depending on how this goes i might go for a brushless setup to give a bit more oomph.

She will be getting full lights and probably an action electronics noisy thing for sound.

My kinda guy! I love the big, complex model boats.

Don't forget to seal/waterproof all of the wood bits inside the hull.

He's a big boy isn't he!

I can certainly see the appeal, very impressive model.
What jet drives have you installed?

Its got 3 29mm graupner jet drives. I was toying with the idea of using kmb jets but it would cost a lot, I already had the graupners and I would have to make big alterations to the hull to fit them. I've seen other moonrakers on eBay running at a decent lick with the stock drives.

The problem with a boat of this size is leak testing! Think I'll need to buy a paddling pool to fit her in!

Yeah the Missus put her foot down, apparently two challengers, a moon Raker, Najade, jules verne and 16 1/16 scale tanks is too much!

Quite right too, why can't you do something sensible with your time like play golf?

Look in to the Model Solutions Canada sound modules. I was pretty impressed with the realism. He even has a Moonraker sound set available.
Big money but you don't seem to be afraid of spending it. :0

We has a Moonraker in our club , the member left to move onto bigger things but his ran 2 lower speck 700 motors and a higher spec one, it was super fast, he set it up so it would run at up to 3/4 throttle on the 2 outboard jets with steering etc, then the 3rd jet with a 5 cell and faster motor would kick in.

Moonraker with twin V8 sound system (2 min 29 sec)

I think this Vidio is befor putting in the Lipos, it went a lot faster

I did look at the speed 700 neodym motors, at 50 each though I think maybe too much. I would be intrested to see what kv and power these motors have so I can find a brushless equivalent!

Engine sound on yachts like that is unrealistic by definition, these yachts are so well insulated that the only place where you'll be able to hear the sound from those engines is inside the engine room itself.
Even 1 deck above the only sound you'll be able to hear is your own breath.
Off course you can add a sound system but don't think you'll be making it more realistic.

Greetings Josse

If the exhaust is above water like the one in the video, you will be able to hear it from a distance. Especially if it is planing under a high load.
