which speed controller

i am just beginning my journey into RC after some years of static modelling, but the problem is its about 40 years since i did electrical engineering , i understand the basic electrical operating system - what i cant figure is how to choose a speed controller as their are so many on the market, some list number of cells, some show amps and cells.some show 50 amp forward 20amp reverse and does it matter if it says its for a plane / boat or car ?. and the top question can i control a pair af motors from the same speed controller.
HELP !

To answer the questions, cells gives you an indication of the voltage range example 10 cell Ni-mh/Nicat is equvelant to 12 volts (1.2 volts per cell) Lipo cells are 4.2 volts per cell so a 3 cell lipo controller is 12.6 volts.

Amps, 90 % of scale boating needs would be under 20 amps per motor, the propeller size and RPM will determine the amp draw of the motor.

Most boats require reverse, car and boat ESC's generally have this feature, airplane ESC's do not, does not mean they cant be used for applications where reverse is not required.

Brushed ESCs can drive 2 motors but a lot of manoeuvrability is lost if you run single channel 1 or 2 ESC's, this again depends on the whether the boat needs it, go fast stuff doesn't, tugs and other scale boats do benefit from dual control.
The amp rating of the ESC needs to be increased as well if running the motors in parallel (much better to do this anyway) series connected motors have issues.

My recommendation for the brushed speed control would be the M.A.C.K. Products #7300 electronic speed control. http://www.mackproductsrc.com/Speed%20Controls.htm

thanks for the replys the battery i am hoping to use is Capacity: 8000mAh
Voltage: 4S1P / 4 Cell / 14.8v
Discharge: 30C Constant / 40C Burst
Weight: 845g (including wire, plug & case)
Dimensions: 166x69x35mm
the motors are X2 JOHNSON 600 MOTORS 6-12v
i have still to calculate power drain to see if this would be suitable , the boat when finished will be just over 1metre long so can accomodate this no problem , i will let you know how i get on , thanks again and all the best

What size props are you going to use and what type of boat is it?

Contact Speedline models, and see what propellers they use, or recommend.
Perhaps they sell them, or can direct you on where to purchase a pair if your scale is different.
