I love my Archos AV500 30 gig PVP. Its worked flawlessly since I bought it brand new 5 or 6 years ago. I've heard they can be obtained via E-bay for about $100.00 give or take.

FWIW, I use an older Aiptek Personal Media Player. Nothing fancy. It records through static just fine and in fact has been great with troubleshooting known dead areas. Only negative is that in bright light it's somewhat hard to see the screen. That is probably common of most solutions though.

Yes the Archos AV500 records through static, sorry I dont have any videos showing that. The sample video below is not de-interlaced.

It seems as if the video is a bit small? Like 320 x 480. Recorder setting?

By the lake (2 min 8 sec)

Has some static in the middle of it if I remember correctly.

bare in mind that the "bad" quality of the picture is due to the camara ( really cheap 380 lines one) and all the format conversions and movie maker and youtube.

cheers

ps. it cant start recording from static, says it cant find a source. but if you have a picture and then go static is keeps recording and displaying the static

Just to let you guys know I went with the AV500 and it serves me well:

Pros:
built in screen
Serves both as a DVR and MP4 player
Can sort,edit files
Serves me well for other purposes for watching any pics or movies
It looks like its easy to change the hardrive as the back plating (battery) comes off just by sliding the button
Audio recorder
Built in speaker and microphone

Cons:
My only complaint is the poxy docking pod which contains all the connections like AV in/out, s video etc. I think this should be intergrated into the DVR and to actually use it you must connect it to a power source. Note if you do get one you need one of these so you can connect to AV/OUT in the field without needing to connect to a power source.

Not a huge selection of DVR settings but mine are on highest which is:
Bitrate(can be edited): 2500 kb/s
Res at 640 x 480
Saved as AVI

Havent had any problems with recording.
Prior to this I had the easycap USB but after my first attempt at flying on the field I found out although its a cheap solution that can work just as good I had the Ulead software playing up on me and comming up with a corrupted file message. I also decided not to use virtualDUB at the time since it requires time to setup as it doesnt save youre settings. All that time I could be flying instead so I gave up trying to record it. This DVR solution works well for me less wires, less space in my bag and it does its job!

This is the unedited uncompressed sample video I made just walking round garden. Big difference compared to all these youtube vimeo compressed videos IMO.

Doesn't exactly blow me away though.
Any recorder can handle low motion (holding still in front of a cat on the ground).
FPV recorders need to handle both high motion and high detail, which is
the worst case scenario for digital video compression.
A snapshot from your clip while walking across the lawn shows major compression
artifacts. Lots of square blocks where there should be high detail, because
it just doesn't have the bitrate to handle the moving details.

Just a note I didnt record it for this post it was in my DVR so I thought Id post it which is why I used the word sample. I thought it was fine but you seem better suited to making the judgement but I must admit it doesnt look so good in a frozen frame.
Have you got a DVR that works better for you?
