Jmel, thanks for the rundown on the video equipment. That was very informative. I assume that camera uses SD cards. But, does it use a lot of disk space? How big would a 10 minute video file be on that camera? What file format does it record in? Does that software update allow you to choose the file format?

mkpatrick, I spent my fair share of time on an atoll named Diego Garcia. It was quit a bit bigger than your Johnston Atoll, but I actually enjoyed it. I was on a nuclear cruiser and had just spent over 4 months out at sea without seeing land. That was pretty darn bleak. About the only thing more isolated than being on a ship would be on a submarine where not being able to see anything over 10' away for several months affects your vision when you finally get to crawl out of that hole.

Jwellsy, I use a transcend R95/W60 MB/s SDXC card. VERY fast write speed, 64gig. 10 mins is about 2 gigs in size at 1080p 30fps. I upload to youtube which takes a little while (faster now that suddenlink has upgraded us all to 50 megabit down, 5 up).

You can save on size but then quality suffers. If you change to 60fps, size goes WAY up (double). File format is .MOV.

I've never tried messing with format before, I assume .MOV is the native. It's gotten to the point where I only use youtube now for editing on the fly, so format doesn't really matter to me. I spose you could run it through another app to convert. I do know you can capture in raw format, and these files are super huge...

How in the world did you guess that? Yes, it was CGN-35. Our sister ship was the Bainbridge and we were normally attached as an Enterprise escort on Westpacs. They decommissioned it not too long after I got off, it should have been decommissioned long before I ever got there. Those engine rooms were hell holes trying to keep them running.

A friend of mine was on the Trux, he was an ET. He told me all about it. He was on that ship during the Iran hostage crisis.
Coincidently, speaking of decommissioning, I live in the Pac NW, my sister works in the Navy ship yards, she was on the crew that actually decommissioned that ship.

Was he a nuc ET or a topside ET? I was on there doing circles in the Gulf of Oman just off the coast of Iran too. I was a machinists mate in engineroom #1. Your buddy and I probably both have our pictures in that Westpac yearbook. Did he happen to actually work on the sonar?

Yeah, Mr. Miller is an ace on the sticks with his Gee Bee. Makes it look a lot easier than it is, probably would be good for some kind of product shot.
A kid from the field we fly at was out with us today, so I had him film the takeoff from the side. He was a little slow on the trigger, but this should give you an idea how it looks:

PongWing Takeoff (0 min 17 sec)
