Sailing "On Spreckels Lake" - Events, Regattas & the SFMYC (kinda, sorta, maybe)

Thread Discliamer: Ok, gang, this is NOTHING official nor authorized by the
Powers-That-Be of the San Francisco Model Yacht Club.

Just something like the Hansen gang and the Central Coast power boys have put up; a place to make some announcements, hang a few photos and chit chat about what's happening at the Lake.

For official 'doin's,' you can find the Club's official website here. For power and other things around the Lake, youcan also check out the original 'On Spreckels Lake' thread over in Dock Talk.

This thread supports:
Model Sailing of all types on Spreckels Lake in General and
EVERYONE interested in our hobby.

Not just the SFMYC.

So - Long as everyone has that clear that this is nothing official nor SFMYC sanctioned;
onward and downward! To the Abyss!!!

For the OFFICIAL San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department RULES that govern all boating on Spreckels Lake and in San Francisco's Parks... Click here. and here.
These "rules" have the force of law under the San Francesco Municipal Code's Park Code.

Update from Feb 2012 Newsletter...

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT OF CLUB POLICY

The following additions to Club policy #3, Use of Spreckels Lake by Members, were unanimously approved by club members at the January meeting. The purpose is to ensure that all classes of R/C sailboats have the maximum opportunity to practice and improve their sailing skills.
  • Spreckels lake is a public lake in a public park. Model boating activities of the SFMYC do not have priority over public use of the lake.
  • All classes of R/C sailboats must be allowed to compete and participate in non-scheduled, informal “pick-up” races, subject to a basic knowledge of the Racing Rules of Sailing by the skippers. Experienced members are encouraged to treat such “pick-up” races as opportunities for training and instruction of less experienced members.
  • All R/C sailboats operated by club members that are not competing in formal, club sanctioned regattas or informal, non-scheduled races, must keep approximately 30 feet away from those that are.

First Victoria Class Regatta held on Spreckels Lake - Silver Fleet

I've been 'nudgin' on him for a while for something consolidated for the sail guys to post to, especially since some of them are taking lots of pictures as well...

Also, I mainly shoot power stuff (though not exclusively)!

But to get things rolling, I have about four regatta series on the NAS drives waiting for editing, including today's ''Virgin' Victoria Regatta' which was the first organized Victoria event on Spreckels Lake and was run by members of the 'Silver Victoria Fleet.' The 'Silver Fleet' means that the boats are stock and not souped up. (Mike can probably explain better than I.) The 'Gold Fleet,' are souped up / modified boats.

Anyway, will throw more stuff up as I get it prepped and edited. I sincerely hope that the other folks who run around the Lake with sailboats and cameras (or at least camera phones) will post and write here as well - I spend all my boat building time shooting and editing images... QQ

I have to push on the Victoria thing to make a deadline, so that will probably be the first thing to post on this new thread....

Very rarely -

This is to fix the collapsing walkway down on the southeastern end of the Lake.. This has become a definite pedestrian hazard and is growing larger by the week as more and more walkway slide under the water. It has also become a media vs city department issue on a few local websites; sfgate, yelp etc.

Last time they drained the Lake was for a major renovation and that was back in 2004. I think the time before that was in the late 70s.

Where are we moving our sailing events to? It would be a bummer to lose our season. Any Ideas Jim or Bob or other board members. Are we alowed to use other water in the park or lake merced? Ryan

Re: the season, the FSO/RCSO are working the schedule- likely to be suspended until the lake is back on line (see Rich S. for more detail) re: the nationals scheduled for '13 the club is looking into alternatives should the lake not be up in time- Alternatives include the possibility of Lake Merced- This is being worked to the fullest.
