<<<<<<<<<South San Francisco Bay Sloping>>>>>>>>>>

Finally got a chance to take advantage of an oncoming Stormfront and madien my Kato Std. I'd been wanting to try this levy slope off the 237 and Lafayette, near the new Polycon & Flextronics Bldgs.

Got over there about 3pm, and found the wind building into double digits. Nice West facing slope with access between the two bldgs, but the wind still had a N element to it, so I went around the back and hiked a bit to the slope facing directly over the Back Bay.

Wind velocity continued to build as I finshed my preflight and gave 'er a toss into 12~14mph breeze. One click of right and the recognition that even on Low Rates, my elevator was sensitive, in this wind. A couple of passes to help define the limits of this slope,...lift starts to drop as the slope decreases, headed to Alviso and increases sharply where the slope peaks to my left. OK, try a few pumps and a few low passes of buzzing the slope face. Not bad. Spent a good hour hashing 'er out and tuning my settings.

Temp continued to drop as the sun moved behind the oncoming clouds. Was glad I brought my sloping gloves, with the slot thru the thumb for my Tx stick. Brought the Kato around the backside for a soft stall landing on the top of slope. Thought about a catch, but better to take my successful madien and run.

Looks like the site is worthy, although I noted a couple of challenges that may need further investigation (Burrowing Owl, Polycon Security, etc..). With the connection of several levies, there are S, W, NW, N, NE facing slopes all within a short walk

Checked out another spot, on my way out yesterday. Looks like an old LandFill, from the methane lines dotting the landscape.

Didn't have a chance to throw out on Sunday but it also looks to be worth a try. Off of Carl Rd

Chip,

I've got to ask the question, what's got you exploring my neighborhood so far north from your usual haunts?

Although not exactly next to the industrial park Comm Hill off Hy 87 is not that far away for some N - NW facing sloping.

It's not slope flying but every Sunday the SBSS has a winch set up for TD fun flying in the Los Gatos area. ( Usually Dartmouth Middle School)

There are some very good CR Aircraft that will Thermal Soar very well at this site!

Know that spot well, as my oldest son was on their Basketball Team, before I moved the Family back to Carlsbad.

He still reminds me about it....

Dale,

I only have the planes I've built while working here, with me...

...so a couple of Kato Slope wings and an incomplete 42" SOS

Is this SBSS the same Group that was mentioned in this thread as holders of the gate key?

Thinking of trying these two sites again this weekend,....

.....depending on wind direction. Lafayette St seems to have a few more options for wind direction than Carl Rd, but Carl Rd might be a bit more friendly

Would also like to hit the Coast, if the West wind shows up....and still need to try Coyote Hills

There were 5 guys there counting me but just the 3 of us after it started to blow. Good day & worth the hike.

SBSS is South Bay Soaring Society
http://www.sbss.org/

Mission Peak is one of their slope locations I'ts not a big air place.

NCSS is Northern California Slope Soarer's

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2025926

Their home location is called the Slot up by Benicia. It has a gate combo for members,

Big wind is found at the coastal sites / Slot but not usually at this time of year.

Hey Chip -

If you find your way up to North San Fran, you should give me a call and we can hit Tic and or 4 Corners. They are pretty decent sites, and usually one or the other is flyable if there is any wind.

I flew down below Halfmoon yesterday, and it was very good conditions. 35 mph would be my guess.

Not sure my Kato Std is worthy of TIC Point
