Need wind

Looks like we are running out of time. Why is it when I have some planes ready the wind stops blowing from the South?

Global warming -- summer is here too soon with the NW winds. You could drive to Cape Kiwanda for some nice NW-wind flying.

Pat, do you ever get over to Cape Kiwanda? I've see on the Cascade Paragliders page that they fly there, but I've never flown there and would be interesting in going over there with someone else sometime. I know you normally fly Ecola, but didn't know if you ever wanted to take a trip to Pacific City.
Also, you definitely need to make it to SlopeFest this year at Cape Blanco!

Sounds good Pete, I got some light stuff and a couple powered ones. I'll probably be over there 10:30-11 this morning.
Anyone else want to come up and do the last walk of shame for the season?

Cape Kiwanda

I'm thinking of heading over to Pacific City either Saturday or Sunday. Both days are forecast to have 10mph from the NNW/NW. I'm assuming that I should climb up the dune on the ocean side path, then fly from the back side.
Anyone have any tips on flying at Kiwanda?

Rick, yes I did on Saturday but the wind was a bit light, 10 is probably pushing it, and it was pretty foggy at times. I parked on the beach on the south side of the cape (below the Pelican brewery since the blessing of the dory fleet was taking place).
It was my first time flying at Kiwanda and not knowing exactly where to go, I just went straight up the hill to the top clump of trees (the tall one on the left side of the second picture in this post http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...postcount=1595)

That was a mistake . The hill is a lot higher then I remember it as a kid (at least that's my theory)!

Behind the trees is a large bowl that is really turbulent. I flew my slope monkey there for a bit but the whole time it was just a fight to stay upright. I eventually went along the top of the ridge to the right (East) with the intent of flying the SE corner of the bowl. It was then that I saw the jellies flying even more East on the lower ridge.
I went over to the lower ridge and flew there for about an hour before getting blown back over the ridge and since my plane was just about at the bottom of the dune, I decided to pack it in.
In hindsight, the best approach would be to climb the lower ridge to the right of the straight up approach. This is about where the roof of the van is in that second photo mentioned above. Another approach would be to come in from the North from somewhere. On the Cascade Paragliders site, they mention the road to go in on, but also say that 4WD is recommended since you need to cross a rocky stream. Not sure, didn't try.

After Cape Kiwanda, we headed down the coast a bit before driving back to Corvallis on Hwy 20. I stopped at Moolack beach to give that a shot but it's a pretty sketchy site to try to fly. In my opinion, it's not a safe place to fly since it's pretty close to Hwy 101. I've seen reports of jellies and hangs flying from there in the past, but I don't think it's really a very flyable RC site.

Tom, thanks for the report. I too have noticed that the hills have gotten a lot taller as I got older! I have a slope monkey too and just ordered an Alula Trek for the light days. Maybe we can get a group together to go down again. Rick
