RC Bermuda Sloop...A Year Later...

...and still not finished! But, I just retired two weeks ago, so I'm spending a lot more time in my workshop. Just now it's fully rigged (except for control lines) and the paper patterns for the sails have been fitted, as you can see in the photo. I was lucky enough to be able to write it all up for Seaways' Ships in Scale magazine, and the last part goes in the mail today. I've got a related Web site up on Yahoo (RC Bermuda Sloop) where I've put up plans and templates for building and as a place for folks to discuss construction, fitting out and sailing. My own limited expertise ends with the building process, so it'll be a shared project as far as control systems and sailing goes.

The control process I've settled on is the simple sloop setup from Williams (page 73) with overlapping jib control as per the diagram on page 71. The tops'l will be a variant of parallelogram control with a separate servo.

Wish me well!

She will be a neat sight on the water, a throwback to 1700's :-).

There is no history at all for the vessel drawn by Frederic Chapman in his classic work "Architectura Navalis Mercatoria 1768". She was just a typical Bermuda sloop of the era, used as merchant vessels, privateers, etc. You used to be able to find most of his drafting of vessels of that era in his section from the Swedish Maritime Museum.
