Steve_, thanks! There are a few issues. The screw holes furthest to the rear were misaligned by .73mm so I had to slot the holes in the side plates to get the screws in. I would also like to make the battery mounting plate longer so it can be screwed into the upper deck once it's flipped into position. Finally, the plate cost $8.55 to print which is ridiculously expensive considering the overall cost of our 9116s, right? Finally, I want to perform some more thorough testing on the possible issue with the revised gyro orientation. I'll take it out this weekend for a "spin"...har har

I want to trim my balance bar weights as well. It sure would be nice to improve response and not to have to worry about the canopy and tail boom taking a beating all the time. I like your trimmed side plate and have been thinking about building up the lower chassis and side plates(bowed outward to absorb crash impact) as a single piece, but it could get unjustifiably expensive.

Yes, the plastic can be dyed, but it can also be printed in a few other colors.

hello guys, I am having hard time to find battery for my 9116.I have this 1700 mah 2s1p batter but it is so heavy. can I separate two batteries and use each of them as 7.4v 850 mah battery? how can I do it? which cable must go where? if you rip it apart you will get 2 batts 1s 1700mAh.

The stock weights figure out to 3.66 grams. I have mine down to 9.5 grains and the blades are trimmed to 17 mm near the grips and 15.5 mm at the ends. It still hovers at or just slightly above half throttle. I may trim them just a leeetle more!

With the reduced torque acting on the tail motor from those two mods I had to program in 80 points of rudder trim or the tail motor overpowers the main motor. Now I'm wondering if I'll have enough trim left to compensate for the dd unit. Might wind up trimming down the tail rotor blades.

You're right about it being almost like a cp. It'll drift off in the direction of the last cyclic input and has much lessened self leveling tendencies. If we could find stiffer blades to eliminate the coning it would react just like a cp. And the increased head speed sounds more cp like. I'm also thinking that the reduced drag and load on the main motor may help it's longevity, since it revs higher at the same throttle setting.

I reversed the PCB in the design without giving gyro orientation any thought, but these posts about having to move the reversed gyro behind the axis of rotation make sense. The strange thing is, I don't have any spinning issue with the new layout. I don't get it...


Wow, you did a fantastic job! That's taking modding to a whole new level. I didn't even know that it was possible for the average Joe to have something like that done.

I also reversed mine without a thought to gyro placement. It's in front of the main shaft and works fine. In retrospect it sure does seem logical though that it would have to be behind the main shaft.

If you are able to do the CAD part by yourself it is possible and not even expensive.

Well guys 'n' gals,
I still haven't received my "super light" 16D motor yet, so no progress to report.
It looks like I'll have to chop away....errr, modify the upper frame slightly, to accommodate the slightly larger girth of it. (or put it on a diet.)

Oh yeah. I bought 2 (4) of those ball bearing 180's, plus brushes as well, as a back-up plan.
Put your hand up if you want to "give one a whirl" & I'll send you one.

Will see if the S 16D carbon brushes fit the 180 motors, when they eventually fly in.
