Sending a Glider into Space

Splash

Help Fund Project Thunderstruck

Project Thunderstruck is planning to test a Mach 1.5 glider as a first step to sending payloads to space in an efficient and affordable way. This supersonic glider will break the sound barrier and world records alike. It will be launched from a weather balloon at half the distance to space and should reach speeds up to 1250MPH. Even more impressive than that, is this glider will be piloted by 13 year old Jason Brand, who has also done a lot of the design work on the aircraft. This flight will take place in Australia later this year and we'll all be able to watch from the cockpit FPV style. It's a really cool project and is already getting backed by the likes of HobbyKing as a sponsor. You can learn more and back the project via their IndeiGoGo page here. We'll be keeping a close on this project's development.

That would be very ambitious to get foam to hold together at over 1000mph.
I am also curious the materials he plans to use.

The foam wont know its going that fast due to the thin atmosphere at altitude..the drag on the airframe will be relative to the density altittude.

LOL! at that speed a semi tractor trailer would fly! Trust me, it will glide.

If I may ask an OT question, how do you make a post like the thread's starter did?

Interesting. How will you control it at that altitude and speed? Also how is that legal? did you have to get special permission from your local government? Good luck, cant wait to see it fly.
