Got to see the progress my buddy has made on the plugs. They are absolutely awesome! One more coat of primer and some wet sanding and they will be ready to ship. I will post some pictures when I pick them up mid-week. They are way better than I had imagined they would be. Very excited!

I will be glad to have it done. I have been making a few alterations to the cut files. Trying to get the most parts out of fewer pieces of wood. There are a bunch of pieces to this thing! Also updating the plans so it would be easier for someone else to build from them.

Really looking forward to being able to fly this thing at some events this spring. It should be a good conversation starter!

Cowl & Canopy Plugs v.2 completed!

Very happy with how these turned out. James did great work priming, filling, priming & buffing these. Hope to get them boxed up over the weekend and ready to ship Monday.

Matt.
Is it Fiberglass Specialties that will be making the cowl and canopy for you?
Is this the US manufacturer you were referring to back in post #401?:
("I have talked to a U.S. manufacturer about producing a fiberglass cowl and clear canopy for the 50% Bumble Bee. They can do it, and they can do it right. They would have the molds and could produce any amount needed in the future. It ain't cheap. Not sure that I can justify the cost for a one of a kind model.
But it would be cool...")

How did you manufacture the new plugs, are they hollow or solid?

I am working on a scratch build project of my own, that's why I am interested.

Magne,

Yes, Fiberglass Specialties will be the supplier.

The plugs are built up from a ply frame with balsa skin. The inside of the plug was then filled with expanding foam. They are quite solid. The plugs were primed and then a thin coat of Bondo was applied and sanded to shape.

Molds will be made of these. The Cowl will be laid up in fiberglass, the canopy vacuum formed.

Boxes shipped. Should make it to Arkansas by Wednesday.

It was kind of sad leaving them there at the UPS Store. They have been a fixture in my workshop for a long time now...

I have been trying to maximize the laser parts layout. There are a lot of laser cut parts on this build! Currently I have it down to 42 individual sheets of balsa and ply! I might be able to combine a few more parts, but we are still looking at a bunch of wood!

Plugs made it to Fiberglass Specialties safely!

They are pleased with the plugs and are ready to get started!

Now I just have to get some cash together to pay for it.

I have a few items for sale to help fund this...

Well, after some hanger thinning I scratched enough $ together to fund the making of the molds for the new cowl and canopy. Fiberglass Specialties should have some parts for me in a week to ten days!

the "bee"

Glad to hear you've got those finishing parts on the way. I'm anxious to see the "bee" fly in person.

Terry,

I think It will be ready in time to get a number of flights in before SEFF. I want to make sure I am comfortable with it before I fly in front of so many people...
