Flying Foamy Race Car

After a group of us in my club decided to build S.P.A.D. .60 size nitro powered flying race cars, to fly in this years Lador Day air show. I decided to build an electric smaller version out of Dow Blucor FFF and 2 mil Coroplast. The LE was created by using the fold crease of two sheets of FFF. I used Gorilla glue, hot melt glue, 5 min epoxy and medium CA to put it together. Motor stick was epoxied in place with a little right thrust. I cut a notch in the Spar so the stick could be epoxied to it as well as the LE of the wing. Had a time balancing it and needed weight on the front, so I decided to make it beneficial weight and added landing gear, which gave me the correct CG. The Gear was made from a wire sign holder I bought from Home depot for $0.99. Then I glued tiewraps to the rear profile wheels to prevent the runway from grinding the foam down on take offs and landings.

To give credit where credit is due, the idea came from the Plastic Concept Planes Flying Porsche

Specs:
AUW Weight RTF
18.25 oz.

wingspan
20 1/2"

Chord including evelons/ 0 degrees incidence
24 1/2"

wing thickness at spar

Spar=2 1/2" tall piece of FFF
located 6" from leading edge

5"X20 1/2"

Vertical stab/rudder
7"longX 4 3/4" tall

Elevons 2 mil coroplast
3 1/4" long X 10" wide ea.

First setup was with a brushed motor that didn't have enough power with a 7.4 volt lipo.

Motor
GWS 350 D gear

ESC
CC pixie 20

Prop
GWS 10X4.7 SF

Battery
Polyquest 7.4V 1100 mAh Lipoly

Servos (3)
All-E-RC 9 gram

Rx
GWS Pico 4 Ch.

On the second set up I went brushless and it seems to work great. Not a 3D machine but it will loop, roll, etc...

Motor
AXI 22308/34

ESC
CC Phoenix 10

Prop
GWS 10X8 HD

Battery
E-Tec 11.1V 1200 mAh Lipoly

Servos (3)
All-E-RC 9 gram

Rx
GWS Pico 4 Ch.

Video my wife took of me flying yesterday
Not as clear as I would like, but the video was taken with a digital camera and not a camcorder. I think she did a good job with what she had to work with.

I remember the larger model this was taken from when it was a glow powered plan from RCM. A fun novelty flyer!

Quicker,

Next time we get a calm day and I can break away, I'll let you fly it. I was grinning from ear to ear yesterday as I flew it. The video was taken on the last flight. I had a total of four 3 to 4 min flights on one pack and still had plenty of battery left. I'm very happy with it and it is really easy to fly. I'm thinking of making another one with a different profile, if I do, I'll post a build thread.

We want to see the video ! Then, if you build few of these, you can actually have a car race, in the air

Video link is in post #2. Here it is again http://www.rcgroups.com/gallery/show...cat=506&page=1 Not the clearest video but you can get the point.

A group of us in my club are building 7 of the .60 nitro version flying race cars to be flown at an event later this year. The group build will be starting soon.

I like the landing on the road. Nothing unusual for a car

Like a James Bond car. Really well done and the video is good.

Patrick Plawner,

That was the first time my wife tried to video with our digital camera. She was trying to zoom in and out while videoing it. I told her next time we may try zooming into a certain setting and leaving it. That way it might be a little clearer. I'm no camera-man so what do I know.

Usta Bee,
I like the photo. LMAO I guess the profile came out better than I thought. I've got to get some paint or graphics on it, so it looks more like a car.

Mike,

Well done on your wife's work, especially for a 1st time !
Mine also help me time to time, but I am a bad husband and keep complaining about this and that, why she did not zoom here, etc....

While I should just say "thank you"
