Scale Build Off 4- Guillow's British SE 5A (Kit 202) converted to RC

Bought one of the new laser-cut Guillow's kits on a big local model fair to convert it to RC. Thought that would be an ideal candidate for the scale build-off.

Nothing to show (yet) - build will start soon.

Guillows

Hi Gupi, glad your building this as I was looking at these new laser cut models as well. Thanks for helping me with servo options on my build too.

Thanks guys, i hope this build will live up to your expectations.

Starting a new build is always like Christmas for me. I traditionally start with the tail surfaces. They are the easiest parts on most of the builds. So i started with the elevator.

What's your impression of the wood in the new kits?

Hey Gupi good luck with the build! I've been thinking about doing this same kit myself, now that they're being laser cut
I'll be watching with interest!

I haven't seen any Guillow's kit except the new laser cut ones, but i've built their Spitfire, Thomas Morse Scout and now their SE5a - i find that the quality of the wood matches that of any other laser cut kit. The laser cut pieces go together very well, though the kits are still a bit on the heavy side since they are a little over-built. You can sand and cut down their formers and keels quite generously to lighten them.

After a couple of decisions about how to connect the servos i started building the fuselage, wings and rudder.

Looking at the reference material i found about this plane, i decided that a scale pull-pull arrangement for the tail surfaces wasn't feasible - way too complicated since the original used pulleys in the elevator stabs to actuate the elevator. So pushrods it is.

I'll go for pushrods in the lower wing for ailerons, too. They'll be connected to the upper wing ailerons with carbon sticks probably.

WRT ailerons, I did similar with my Guillows Camel to what you are proposing.

It was easy, allowed for adjustment, and wasn't too heavy.

Cheers!
