A10 warthog sloper

I am just starting on a PSS Warthog build. Still working on design, I want it to end up around 60 inch span. Will be made from pink foam covered with fiberglass with polycrylic.Not sure what airfoil to use? Or how much to strech things if at all ? I have seen afew A10 slopers that use a flat untapered wing that looks way too long of a span for my liking. I understand that they strech it to make it fly better But not what I am going for. I want it to look more scale, Not be a lead sled. The hill I fly local doesn't get the kind of wind for that. Anyone with suggestions please reply with Ideas. I have some good 3 views and pics for reference material. Plenty out on the web if I want more.

A10 would be a pretty draggy aeroplane, I'm thinking. So if you don't have a great slope or a good breeze, is it going to fly? I have a PSS plan here from a magazine for an A10, it has a really undercambered TLAR section. Presumably to generate enough lift to let it fly with scale sized wings. It has a taper as per the full size, as well. Should make for a pretty cool looking plane tho.
Cheers, simon
Just had an idea...why not build the fuz, and strap on a wing you already have laying around of the right size, see if you can make that fly? Before you go to the trouble of making a wing that might not work.

I did build a 48" A10 a few years back out of EPP, was juat a straight wing, no taper and I used coroplast tail section, and cut a couple of Pop bottles for the naceles. few great still have it. Had to redo the fuse after a really good hit while combating. never got around to putting it back together and I used the wing on somthing else. But it was No where near scale This one will be Bigger and more true to scale. I know the full size plane uses a undercambered airfoil NACA6716 at the root and NACA6713 tips. I know LEG sells a Warthog glider also, want to scratch build this one.

I did not know that. I must revisit the Discovery channel doco on the A10, from what I remember they just banged on about the gun for the whole show

Been there done that

I built this A10 last year for a PSS event but it didnt fly at the event.....
No WIND it did however fly in January and it flies well , It has a really thick
Clark Y foil and flies in reasonably light conditions inspite of its very "draggy"
shape.

Its a great airplane to model with lots of colour schemes .
I will watch this thread with interest.

Nice A-10 Mike.

I had a Combat Models A-10. Not very scale at all, but is did look great in tight to the slope lookin' for the next tank to bust.

Go to Tucson "A" Mountain photo thread to find Mauro's 14ft ws A-10 without motor nacelle's, I think he used a NACA 4412.

1/8 scale

OK decided on the size of this build. Going to go with 1/8th scale which will bring it in with a 86.25 inch wings. Starting to draw up and write out lists and sizes of everything. Found up what should be a handy reference book Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II "Warthog" from Squadron Signal's on Ebay and it should be here anyday. Still looking at airfoils to use and if I should stretch anywhere.

Measuring Up

I am ready to start cutting foam. got the dimensions all figured out. It will end up Very close to scale Here is what I am shooting for
Wingspan = 86.50 inches
Wing Cord = 14.50 inches
length = 78.75 inches
nacelle length = 16.75inches
nacelle width = 7.25 inches

A buddy and I are working on something special for the Gun. I am gonna try the E204 root and E214 tip airfoils. And I know it will be Draggy but I am flying with nacelles, Hardpoints and even some munitions. I am going for the Looks more than the Speed.
