Question
Hitec X4-Eighty Power Supply?

Hello all,
Recently pickep up the Hitex X4-80 charger. I must say I am looking forward to the upgrade from only charging one battery on my old hyperion to charging multiple batters at once. However, I find myself in need of a power supply. I am aware of the criteria needed for one, but despite thorough forum lurking I have been unable to find anything that people suggest. Can anyone provide and insight? Thanks.

Presuming the charger is a 50watt quad = 200watts.This will work with room to spare 360 watts.

The combined maximum output of all four channels is 200W. Consequently, that would be the theoretic minimum input you'd need from a power supply, but electrical circuits never work at a perfect 1:1 input/output ratio. There are always losses and it's widely recommended that you choose a PS that can deliver at least 120% of a charger's total output.

Hitec's recommendation for this charger is an 1118 V DC power supply with a minimum amperage rating of 20 amps. 11V at 20A is 220W which is 110% of the theoretic minimum input requirement. 18V at 20A is 360W which is 180% of the theoretic requirement (200W).

I'd choose the 18V option because the extra power could be used to power another small charger, but if budgetary constraints are an issue you could also look at this option:

18V at just 12A is 216W which, for all practical purposes, is as good as 11V at 20A for driving the charger because circuit loss in chargers almost always goes down as the input voltage goes up. In other words, if you can find a good deal on an 18V power suppply that puts out at least 12A it will be a good match for your charger.

But more is always better.

Pete

A converted server supply of at least 400 watts would be the most cost effective solution and allow you to operate your charger at full output with headroom to spare.

The version the OP mentions is an 80W charger, not 50W, 320W total. As Mark said, 400W would be fine.

Thanks Azzar and everyone else for your input. THE charger is 80w per port totaling 320w all together. Would anyone care to recommend or link me to a PS that is compatible, that perhaps people who use this charger use?

At the moment, I am thinking about the Venom 350w PS

HH says it is discontinued, but the LHS can get it. My only fear is that this is a 25 amp PS BETWEEN the two ports, accounting for 12ish amps for port. Can anyone chime in?

Thank you!!

Sure sounds like it from the description.

I would get something like this ten times over the Venom:

<facepalm>

I'm so "programmed" to discuss the old X4 (which I have) that I missed that.

If that power supply is set up, which it appears to be, as simply having two parallel sets of outputs and you can pull 18V/30AMPS from one set of output posts, I don't see you ever needing anything different for that charger.

Nice unit with the LCD display, see what's going on at a glance.

How many beans they gonna ding ya for that?

Well, everything showed up today and is working as expected- Fine!! My only comlaints are the following:

1) The fan on the charger goes on and off every few seconds
2) The PS does not show the amount of amps going out. (At least not accurately)
