1000mm Wingspan DLG Kit

If you are looking for an easy project for the winter, check out this new DLG kit from HobbyKing. It's a simple mosquito class glider with rudder and elevator for control that can be used on the slope or an open field discus launch style. The small size is great for taking it with you for spontaneous flights. The kit is laser cut, so it will go together in a snap. The tail section is joined to the fuse with a carbon tube. The wing also benefits from carbon reinforcements. This is a pure kit so you'll need to provide your radio gear and building supplies. It could be just the thing to occupy your mind while the weather outside is frightful.

Elf-like. Should work fine.

Doesn't perform near as well as the Elf. I've flown both.

Are you talking about this kit or the mini-dlg BNF version also sold by hobbyking?

Actual I've flown both versions of the hobbyking models...and the same holds true about the Elf as the best performer. I'm really not knocking the hobbyking offerings though, as they do offer a low cost way to get into DLG. But at some point you will want a more robust model for more powerful (and thus higher) launches....which the Elf allows for. It also has a more efficient airfoil I believe as it does seem to outfloat the HK's. But again, if $ is an issue, go for HK and get into DLG. Warning...it is extremely addictive and you WILL spend more money on it! But its cheaper than helicopters! And its good for your body as it will keep you limber and active.

This should be posted on top of the stickies

But dont throw away your heli's, there will be days it is too windy to DLG and you just want to chop through the rough air

That's one I'd snag if it were available. I'll just have to stalk it for awhile.

on reflection, i would be really chuffed to be able to just buy the tail boom as an item and design my own version of the rest of it

but a nice kit for those that want to build easily

I spotted this tonight (R2 have some real cheap sailplanes at the mo including the famous Speedo, out of stock of course).
No idea if it is wrapped but incredibly light for a thicker tube at 600mm? Might need to check out the Spectre threads ($52!) to see how strong they are. Also check out fishing stores for broken carbon rods as a cheap (free) source fo suitable booms for smaller gliders. Traditionally people use kite spars ar la Mimi.

There is a big difference between booms for 1 metre and 2 metre spans. DLG needs are greater than other sailplanes. Tubes need to be wrapped carbon preferably tapered.

One metre DLGs usually use a commercially available kite spar. One metre Mimi recommends 510mm of a 3PT.
The 50 inch Gambler has OEM Goodwins boom that may be available soon as the Geforce UL.
Mountain models has a boom available.
