I flew one of these today and loved it. I helped a buddy set up his flap to elevator mix and had to take it up and down a few times. Man, if I had 4 bills to blow on a big foamy...

Ahh well. I'll have to stick with my Sport Cub for now.

Been hearing of stock motor problems. Anyone tried a Eflite Power60 470kv on the stock ESC ? Thinkin of getting a CZC, but seems like a lot of $ for the plane and then have to install new power system too ?

Stock is fine, thousands are flown with no problem but with stock prop and setup. Usually, it is overheated due hot weather, less than optimal airflow over and around the ESC, or propping up to a higher pitch which is like death by a thousand paper cuts. I personally think the stock 60 amp ESC is OK but not for this plane. It should have more reserve such as 80 amp ESC.

That being said, I upgraded by CZ Cub to the exact motor and Castle 90 amp ESC with its high amp BEC. The Power 60 provides incredible power. It can fly with up 17 inch prop but it really draws down the pack far to quickly and it really is not necessary. A 16x8 Xoar or equivalent is a real sweet setup. You need to use a 5000 mah 30c minimum pack. Flight times are in the 8 minute range if you fly at varied speeds. If you fly wide open it is 6 minutes of less.

Go to my BLOG and look up all possible modifications you can do to the CZ Cub. The CZ Cub RCgroups Podcast used my blog entry for CZ Cub mods to guide the upgrades. Jim Grahm talks about that in the start of the RCgroups video.

Thx for the info....Just thought the 60 may be a better motor, I've heard of magnets coming loose on stock 50, and I would hate to put the cub in a tree.

Maybe they should offer planes like this as an ARF option also so you can put your own setup in it.

For me, with a 6S the stock plane does great.

The sport will not flex as much, but they usually draw more current than the electric version and running the stock motor/esc on 6s I think we are right at the spec limit. So for stock motor I would use the e prop. Less of a chance of overheating the motor and spitting magnets.
Actually I replaced my motor/esc with the power 60/CC ICE 75 and still run an APC E prop. 17x8 now, but I stuck with the e version. They have served me very well over the last few years.

The stock motor is on the ragged edge with the stock prop. Continued use of a higher pitch APC will probably result in complaints of the magnets coming loose. The Horizon Hobby design left no reserve for the motor should the owner want to change props. If there was a design "god" the plane would have been better if it had a Power 60 or equivalent when manufactured.

I am running a Xoar 15X6-2 on the stock motor and so far no problems after 20 10 minute flights. I would think the esc will give up before the motor.

OK, keep us posted. And yes, the 60 amp ESC has very little headroom as well.

Wood props by their inherent design are stiffer than plastic props except composite props (cabon fiber) so they elevate current draw. If you follow "Dr. Kiwi's" thread of motor testing and look up some of his prop tests you will see how the prop make and type have more or less current draw. For example, GWS electric props draw less than APC props of the same diameter and pitch. APC E props draw less than their gas APC equivalent.

Below is an illustration of running the same motor with same prop diameter and pitch but two different brands.

How many of your guys added a GoPro to this plane?

On a 5000mah pack what are some average flight times you guys get out of this plane?
thanks

I have both a GoPro and an FPV setup I use. I'm also using just a 3300 pack and if I manage throttle I'm getting 10 plus minute flights.

FPV on this plane is pretty cool.

I also had my first mishap with my Cub. It flew out of the back of my truck on the way to the field. It has never done that before. I rarely drive over 45 headed there from my house. It's only 4 miles away.

Damaged wing tube and a chip off the elevator were the damage. I have another tube and elevator ordered.

This was with stock motor /esc and a heavy Turnigy 6s 5000ma 30 c pack APC 15x6 prop blacked out with a Sharpie. Came in around 3.85v per cell. I have gone to a p-60 400kv pack since then running on Zippy compact 5000ma 6s packs turning a 17x8MAS prop and the same flight would come down at 3.98v per cell.
