Looking for APO3 motor alternative

Hi,
I am looking for a 1 cel alternative to the Hobby King APO-3. We need a motor that delivers an honest 40-45 grams of thrust on a 3" prop. I bought the APO-3 and did a group build Micro F-22 ParkJet based on it but we have had nothing but trouble. The best we have seen has been 30 grams of thrust trying a variety of ESCs and batteries. Perhaps we got a bad unit. I have heard of poor QC.
Does anyone have a similar experience or better motor recommendation?
Thanks...

a few details will help us determine the best solution, like what Kv version did you try, what pitch props were you using?

i'm not sure if your f-22 has room for it, but it seems many users on HK had better results with a 4025 gws prop. might be worth a try before going to another motor.

Ap05

I believe the AP05 brushless motor will put out that kind of thrust on 1S
not sure there is a high kv version which you will need with such a small prop.

Hey guys,
Thanks for getting back... I knew that I was missing something when I hit the SEND button!
I have the 7500 kv version APO-3 and was running the GWS 3 x 3. We have tried others. Need 3.5" or smaller diameter prop to fit in the fuse.
Ps: Super cool servo mods. Scharlach!

You might also want to check out the HK ADC5 motor as it has a 3900kva.

AP05(5000kv) with a 3.5'' prop will be close to what your looking for. If it has a Star wind you could change it to Delta for a higher KV. If you decide to go 2-cell this little gem will really get you going.http://www.microbrushless.com/productstj.htm

Great!

I see the HK ADC5 on the HobbyKing site and the Mighty Midgets look excellent. Thanks!
Has anyone played with helicopter motors for airplane applications?

It seems like this high KV motor designed for 1 cel - S5 helicopter motor has potential:

Any reason not to use helicopter motors in planes? Thanks for the good tips!

The HK 1608 5900kv outrunner might work for you, it is stronger than the AP03. I've used it on a couple of planes with good results. I have not measured the thrust, and I am using 3.5 to 4.5" props. A 3" would really scream, if it would fit the prop saver. I used smaller screws and ortho rubber bands on mine.

The MM motors are very good too, but I have not seen them available lately.

Check out Oversky RC. They have some very high Kv motors in the -03 size.

HP03 with13500Kv to 16600Kv; and there is an HP02 with a 12000Kv.

If you go the Mighty Midget route, I recommend the "Single Cell Hot Wind" !!!

From the microbrushless.com website:

Mighty Midget 13/3/12- This hotter wind has been optimized for the FR/AW 220-250mahr cell when propped with a GWS 5*3, or 6*3 prop.

(Measurements at 3.5V )

Prop Amps Thrust RPM

GWS 5*3 1.77 51.5g 7720
GWS 5*3 n 2.29 61.3g 6450

Thanks guys. I'll check them out! Any thoughts on using the high KV helicopter motors in airplanes with a small prop? I am stuck at 3.5" max diameter. Thanks

There is a "secret" MM motor for 1 cell 13/4/10 D give 105g thrust with a good ESC. You can order from HOME FLY, but you need a bigger prop.
