My Little "Red Tail" 1/100 scale P-51D.

Last year at the NEAT Fair, Martin Newell kindly gave me a beautiful carbon fiber 4 blade prop from one of his 1/100 scale masterpieces. I decided to shrink down my great flying 1/48 scale Classroom P-51 design to 1/100 scale to try out the prop! I also wanted to draw up some new graphics for a Red Tail P-51 from the movie Red Tails. However, when I was researching the plane I found that I liked the look of the Red Tail P-51 "Little Freddie" flown by Freddie Hutchins of the 332nd Fighter Group.

The model has a 4.5 inch wingspan and weighs only 1.6 gram RTF with a 30mAh LiPo cell. It uses the Rabbit Rx and a 3.2mm motor out of the Mini Vapor servo geared to swing the 4 blade prop. She is flying great, I will post some video soon.

Joe.

Really nice plane, Joe! So glad you found a use for the prop. I wonder how many people design and build a plane starting with the prop. It reminds me of when Robert Guillot made a beautiful pair of 9mm diameter spoked wheels just for the hell of it, and then designed and built a 3.5" WS White Monoplane around them.

What ratio gearbox are you using?

Martin

Hi Martin,

I remember Roberts plane. He did an amazing job on those wheels!

I just used the gears from the Mini Vapor servo mechanics. I am not sure of the ratio as I did not count the teeth. I tried her DD drive and she flew, but only for a short time. I then decided to try the 3.2mm motor geared, and that did the trick.

I could have used a single phase brushless motor, but I wanted see what this new 3.2mm motor can do.

We need you to start a thread on your new sub 2 inch wingspan "Bipe 50" 50mm (<2") wingspan plane.

It is so NEAT!

Joe.

Hey Joe,

Could you make that model just a wee bit smaller?

Looks awesome!

Hi Doug,

The sub 2 inch wingspan plane in not mine, but Martin Newell's little beauty.

However, this was my attempt at building a sub 2 inch wingspan model. It is a 1.8 inch wingspan Bumble Bee based on AJWoods plans. I just redrew the graphics. I built the model last year, but did not get her flying. However, I think she will fly I just needed more power! I will try the 3.2mm motor geared as I did with the P-51.

It must be fumes from either the Durabatics or InkAid.

Hi Pete,

Yes, I am in my crazy build mode getting my models ready for NEAT and Horizon! You would think that I would be doing most of building in the winter, but it seems that I do most of my building in the summer, when the wind are light for testing. I will be up working late tonight!

This is a video of my 1/100 scale P-51. My wife was sleeping, so I had my 84 year old mom shoot this video. Its is not the best, but at least you can see it flying. I am not sure what happened to the sound.
